Alberta military fire kills 4, overwhelms hospitals

Mass-casualty protocols activated in four cities as wind-driven flames overrun army training grounds

Four Canadian service members died and dozens more were injured Saturday when a wind-driven wildfire tore through a training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, triggering mass-casualty protocols across four cities.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to the base shortly after 4 p.m. local time, according to authorities. Gusts reaching 62 mph pushed flames past the installation’s boundaries into surrounding rural land before firefighters contained the blaze late Saturday. No evacuation orders were issued for nearby residents.

Hospitals in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary declared “Code Orange” emergency designations to absorb the influx of wounded soldiers. Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, told CBC News the volume of patients would overwhelm the city. He called it a disaster, noting the count exceeded what medical staff wanted to tally.

Prime Minister Mark Carney identified the dead as reservists and active-duty personnel from Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, one of Canada’s oldest regiments. Troops had deployed to Wainwright from installations nationwide for the exercises. Carney said families were notified Sunday during a televised address and ordered federal flags lowered to half-staff.

Defense Minister David McGuinty declined to release an exact injury count. He described the RCMP-led investigation as “very, very active and delicate,” telling reporters he could not recall a comparable incident in recent memory. Military officials stated there were no indications of terrorism, though the ignition source remains under review.

Wainwright serves as the Canadian Army’s primary combat training center. The facility spans roughly 1,500 square kilometers of prairie terrain designed for large-scale live-fire maneuvers. Peacetime domestic fatalities of this scale are exceptionally rare for the Canadian Armed Forces, which typically records training deaths in isolated single incidents rather than mass casualty events.

Local officials confirmed property and critical infrastructure near the base were protected by late Saturday. Fox News Digital previously reported McGuinty’s initial confirmation of casualties without specific figures.
