Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham agree to 2031 contract extension

The five-year deal blocks Premier League interest and raises the English midfielder's salary following veteran departures.

Real Madrid and Jude Bellingham have reached a verbal agreement on a new five-year contract that will keep the English midfielder at the club until June 30, 2031, according to Fabrizio Romano. The deal, described by Romano as done and closed, extends his previous arrangement by two seasons.

Lawyers representing both sides must now exchange final documents before an official signing ceremony takes place. Negotiations began toward the end of last season, with both parties aligned from the start.

The renewal locks down a player whose original deal was set to expire in 2029. Premier League clubs had monitored the situation closely. By securing the 2023 Ballon d’Or runner-up through the end of the decade, Madrid eliminates a potential transfer saga similar to those surrounding Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland in recent years.

Bellingham’s salary is expected to rise significantly, placing him among the top earners at the Santiago Bernabeu. That financial bump reflects his expanded role. Following the departures of Dani Carvajal, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, the England international has assumed leadership responsibilities within the dressing room.

Thibaut Courtois is also nearing a new deal that will extend his stay beyond the summer of 2027, according to reports. His renewal is considered one of the first moves in a broader squad-retention strategy by the Spanish club during what has been a mixed start to the current season.
