North Smithfield girls soccer upsets Ponaganset 2-1 in RPI race

Eva Corriveau scored off the opening kickoff and added the winner as the Northmen closed within .003 RPI points of the No. 2 seed.

Eva Corriveau scored directly from the opening kickoff and added a second-half goal to lift North Smithfield past Ponaganset 2-1 on Wednesday night, a result that reshuffled the upper tier of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division II girls soccer standings with two weeks remaining before the postseason.

The victory at Ponaganset High School in Glocester vaulted the Northmen into third place in the Ratings Percentage Index with 3.695 points, sitting just .003 behind the Chieftains for the No. 2 seed. Scituate currently holds the top spot. In the RIIL playoff format, where seeding dictates bracket positioning and home-field advantage through the early rounds, fractions of an RPI point carry enormous weight. A top-two finish can mean avoiding a quarterfinal road game against another elite squad.

Corriveau’s opening strike came within seconds of the first whistle. Following instructions from head coach Bruno Santos to test opposing goalkeepers who start outside their box, she drove the ball toward the net immediately after the center pass. Ponaganset goalkeeper Skye Young, caught off her line, could not prevent it from slipping through. Direct goals from kickoffs remain exceedingly rare in high school soccer because defenders typically have time to retreat, but wet field conditions and a perfectly placed strike neutralized that defensive cushion.

Ponaganset (7-3-3) controlled possession and midfield tempo for much of the opening half. Marron Nerney equalized with 29:26 remaining before halftime, capitalizing on sustained offensive pressure. The Chieftains continued generating chances, but North Smithfield goalkeeper Lora Halliwell and a defense anchored by Anabel Redford absorbed the attack without breaking.

The decisive sequence unfolded late in the second half. Brynn Santos, widely considered one of the most dangerous finishers in Rhode Island high school soccer, chased down a through ball on the right flank. When Ponaganset defenders collapsed to cut off her shooting angle, she lofted a cross to the far side. Corriveau arrived on the left and finished cleanly to restore the lead.

Ponaganset mounted a frantic push over the final five minutes. Nerney struck the post with a shot that produced an audible crack across the complex, and Santos blocked a follow-up attempt twenty seconds later. A corner kick in the dying moments was cleared as the final whistle sounded.

The loss served as a stress test for a Chieftains roster relying heavily on underclassmen. Freshmen and sophomores occupy several starting roles, meaning many players are encountering late-season elimination-style intensity for the first time. Nerney noted the team has scheduled additional practices specifically targeting weaknesses exposed during close losses.

North Smithfield (10-2-3) entered October navigating an uneven stretch. A draw with Pilgrim — now fourth in the RPI — and a narrow home defeat to Toll Gate, currently fifth, left the margin for error razor-thin. A win over West Warwick last Friday stabilized the schedule before the trip to Glocester.

Under the RIIL’s RPI system, which calculates strength of schedule alongside winning percentage rather than relying solely on raw win-loss records, victories over highly ranked opponents generate disproportionate mathematical benefits. That formula explains why defeating second-place Ponaganset moved North Smithfield nearly into the second seed despite having more overall losses than some lower-ranked teams.

The Northmen hold a distinct statistical edge heading into the final stretch: they have beaten or tied five of the other seven programs currently occupying the top eight RPI positions. Their only blemishes against that group came against Toll Gate, while a matchup against St. Raphael remains unplayed. They also secured a tie against Scituate earlier this season.

North Smithfield hosts Middletown in a Saturday matinee, the first of three remaining regular-season contests. Ponaganset plays four more games, including a late-season meeting against regional rival Burrillville.
