Barcelona’s £69m Gordon Deal Exposes the Real Reason Rashford Was Sent Back

Barcelona have committed £69 million ($87.5 million) to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, a decision that formally ended Marcus Rashford’s time at the Camp Nou. The Catalan club bypassed a £26 million ($33 million) option to make the loanee’s move permanent, instead prioritizing the 24-year-old England international.

Speaking on RAC1, sporting director Deco revealed the tactical reasoning behind the pivot. “We are extremely grateful to Rashford. He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony,” he said. The statement came after internal analysis showed a concerning pattern in Barcelona’s performances.

Gordon, who joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for £45 million, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most active off-ball wingers. He routinely ranks among the league’s leaders in final-third pressures and defensive actions by an attacker, a profile that aligns directly with Hansi Flick’s demands.

Rashford, 28, registered 14 goals and 14 assists across all competitions during his loan spell. His campaign culminated in a goal during Barcelona’s victory over Real Madrid that clinched the La Liga title, and his form secured a return to the England squad under Thomas Tuchel ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision to pass on Rashford was not based on his individual output but on a collective drop in work rate. Deco explained that Barcelona’s analysis revealed the team’s energy levels suffered whenever Raphinha was absent, stating: “It was lost. We needed more intensity.”

Flick, who won a treble with Bayern Munich in 2020 using a high-octane pressing system, was reportedly clear about wanting Gordon’s physical profile over Rashford’s discounted price. “We analysed a lot of wingers. Signing someone from the Premier League is almost impossible, but [Flick] was clear with what he wanted and we worked on a deal from there,” Deco added.

Rashford’s return to Manchester has not resulted in marginalization. After reporting to the Carrington training complex late in the summer, the academy graduate immediately re-entered the starting lineup under manager Michael Carrick, featuring in United’s early Premier League matches against Ipswich Town and Everton.

The 28-year-old’s original departure from Manchester United followed a breakdown in his relationship with former manager Ruben Amorim, who arrived at Old Trafford in late 2024. Rashford had been at the club since making his senior debut as an 18-year-old in February 2016, scoring more than 130 goals across nine seasons.

Carrick has publicly backed the forward’s attitude since his return. “He’s added to the group for us, for sure, because it’s pretty obvious,” the manager said. “He’s one of our own. He’s living his dream, playing here now, and trying to be successful and win.”

United’s schedule now includes fixtures against Azerbaijani club Sabah FK and cross-town rivals Manchester City, with Rashford positioned as a core figure. Carrick emphasized the importance of the forward’s mindset: “At this club, there is always players that have come back sometimes, or players that maybe were going to leave, didn’t leave. It’s always about what you do next, and what your intentions are. He’s been fantastic since he came back, I have to say.”

Rashford remains under contract in Manchester as United seeks to stabilize its squad structure under Carrick’s stewardship.
