UAE Coach Cosmin Olaroiu Reflects on Arab Cup Journey, Calls Algeria Clash Toughest Test
Olaroiu discusses team's sacrifices and goalkeeper selection ahead of third-place playoff against Saudi Arabia.

UAE coach Cosmin Olaroiu described the quarter-final match against Algeria in the ongoing Arab Cup in Qatar as the most challenging. His team secured victory through a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in both regular and extra time.
Cosmin spoke to reporters during a press conference. The conference served as a preview for the third-place playoff match against Saudi Arabia, scheduled for Thursday at Khalifa International Stadium.
The Romanian coach told players the confrontations in this tournament are unique. He highlighted the significant physical, tactical, and mental demands. Playing before 60,000 or 70,000 spectators, he stated, made the Algeria match the toughest encounter.
He attributed the team’s modest performance and 3-0 semi-final loss against Morocco to extensive physical sacrifices. Players made these sacrifices during the Algeria match. Some competed despite knee injuries, while others participated despite illness or other ailments, all aiming for success.
Regarding the continued selection of goalkeeper Hamad Al-Muqbali, Olaroiu affirmed his decision. Al-Muqbali deserved to play in the tournament, he explained, having been the best goalkeeper last season. His participation, the coach added, was not a gamble.
Reaching the semi-finals and competing in the tournament is a positive outcome, he concluded. This experience particularly benefits the young players within the squad.
