Nissan Accelerates EV Strategy with Refreshed Ariya and New Models for 2026

Ariya Facelift Unveiled Amidst Micra EV and Redesigned LEAF Launches

Nissan is advancing its electric vehicle strategy with a trio of key launches scheduled for 2026. The Japanese automaker is preparing for the introduction of a new generation of the Micra, which will transition to an exclusively electric model, a significant shift from its combustion engine past. This bold move is mirrored by the also new LEAF.

The third iteration of the LEAF has embraced the SUV trend, with its new form set to arrive in European dealerships by early 2026, following its pricing announcement in Spain. Nissan aims to swiftly bring this crucial compact electric vehicle to the market. Concurrently, the brand’s larger zero-emission SUV, the Nissan Ariya, has undergone a notable refresh, with details gradually emerging since its initial unveiling last autumn.

The 2026 Nissan Ariya’s updates lean more towards cosmetic enhancements. The front fascia features the most significant changes, adopting an entirely new look. This design, first seen on its smaller sibling, abandons the traditional ‘V-motion’ grille. Slim headlights are connected by a decorative strip, from which a trio of fine LED cords, resembling fangs, extend without impacting the main illumination.

The high and low beam projectors remain positioned at the top, while the daytime running lights are integrated into extensions that merge with the body-colored panel, which now occupies the space of the former grille. This revised setup creates a more distinctive and sophisticated appearance, further enhanced by the removal of vertical openings at the front bumper’s edges and the incorporation of black decorative elements. At the rear, the only change to the refreshed Ariya 2026 is the updated light graphic of the taillights, which retain their original shape.

Nissan has provided a first look at the Ariya’s interior, showcasing a high-end cabin. The eco-leather upholstery on the seats, offering enhanced lateral support, underscores this premium feel. While the 12.3-inch touchscreen for both the infotainment system and instrument cluster remains, it now runs Google’s software, promising faster performance and expanded customization options. The 2026 Ariya also introduces V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) technology, among other new features.

Nissan has reportedly revised the chassis tuning for the Ariya 2026, aiming for a more refined driving dynamic in both standard versions and the sporty Ariya Nismo, which will continue to be offered in select markets. This was observed during camouflaged test drives of the vehicle.

However, for the Japanese market, the electric SUV’s updates do not extend to its battery technology. It retains the existing duo of gross capacities at 66 kWh and 91 kWh (net capacities of 63 kWh and 87 kWh). These batteries power front-wheel-drive electric motor options of 218 hp and 242 hp, as well as all-wheel-drive dual-motor configurations producing 306 hp and 425 hp. The maximum ranges remain between 404 kilometers and 525 kilometers.

With the new Nissan LEAF clearly prioritized in the company’s launch agenda, specific information regarding the updated Ariya’s arrival in European countries remains limited. It is anticipated to debut in Europe by mid-year at the latest. Observers will continue to monitor Nissan’s strategic moves closely.
