Newcastle’s Teen Midfield Faces Unbeaten Hull After Injury Wave
Newcastle turn to three young midfielders as injuries mount

NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, England — Newcastle United’s radical structural pivot toward youth development is about to face its most severe tactical test yet, with seven key first-team players sidelined ahead of Saturday’s critical clash against unbeaten Hull City.
The shortage follows a bruising 4-1 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road, the first loss of Matthias Jaissle‘s tenure. Newcastle must now navigate the next fixture with a depleted roster and an improvised lineup while Hull City arrives at St. James’ Park carrying momentum and defensive stability.
The FIFA international window will provide a two-week break after Saturday’s home fixture against Hull City. Newcastle will return to competitive action on October 12 with an away fixture against Coventry City, giving the club time to rehabilitate its injured starters.
For the immediate match, selection options in central midfield have been reduced to 20-year-old homegrown talent Lewis Miley, 18-year-old Dutch youth international Sean Steur, and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba. Captain Dan Burn, midfield anchor Joelinton, and forward Will Osula are all unavailable.
“It will be a young midfield,” Jaissle said during his pre-match press conference. “We trust them. This is our approach. I said four, five weeks ago, it’s a brave journey the club is going on. I’m fully committed to that, so now if there’s one setback we shouldn’t delete our journey or our mission. We’re fully committed, we’re fully aligned.”

Jaissle built his managerial reputation within the high-intensity, youth-centric Red Bull development pipeline at FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg. The current crisis leaves him preparing to field an exceptionally raw central midfield as Newcastle’s youth-focused approach meets the physical demands of the fixture.
The club’s medical room has grown increasingly crowded over the last week. Winger Anthony Elanga suffered a hamstring injury during a training session after scoring in each of Newcastle’s opening two fixtures. He is projected to miss at least six weeks, pending the results of an upcoming MRI scan.
Midfielder Jacob Ramsey sustained a thigh injury during the pre-match warm-up at Elland Road. Winger Nico Gonzalez was forced off during the match itself after entering concussion protocols, while right-back Amar Dedic is also sidelined with an injury. Dedic previously worked with Jaissle in Austria, and his absence further destabilizes Newcastle’s defensive flanks.
Despite the mounting absentees, Jaissle refused to dilute his tactical expectations or lament the lack of experienced options. He described the selection crisis as an opportunity for the club’s younger roster space.
“No new players coming back for the Hull game,” Jaissle confirmed. “We have some injured players missing, but we use that as an opportunity for others. Anthony and Amar will not be able to play on Saturday. JJ [Ramsey] is injured. Hopefully after the international break our injury list is shorter.”
Jaissle is also seeking a response from Newcastle after the defeat at Leeds. “It is really important to show the right reaction after the Leeds United match,” he said. “We are fully aligned and fully committed to showing a reaction in front of our fans. It would be nice to finish this block of fixtures before the international break with a good result.”
