Meta Opens Waitlist for AI-Made Games That Will Play in Instagram and Facebook Feeds

Horizon Create and Horizon Studio will first be available to early-access testers.

MENLO PARK, Calif. — Meta Platforms Inc. is preparing to put prompt-generated video games directly into Instagram and Facebook feeds. When users encounter a video clip of a game built with Meta’s new Horizon tools, they will be able to tap the post to launch it or join an active multiplayer session without installing a separate app.

Waitlist registration is open for early access to Horizon Create, a dedicated mobile application, and Horizon Studio, a browser-based suite aimed at more complex development. Both use generative AI prompts to build playable 2D and 3D titles. Developers and casual users can describe gameplay mechanics, artistic styles, progression frameworks and multiplayer configurations in written instructions, then edit and refine technical elements after the AI generates a foundation.

The move takes Horizon further beyond the Quest virtual reality headsets for which it was first built. The platform launched in late 2021 as Horizon Worlds, a VR-only environment. With Meta’s Reality Labs hardware division continuing to record billions of dollars in quarterly operating losses, the company has worked to separate its metaverse software from its hardware, including through earlier mobile and web versions of Horizon.

“Both enable creators to turn any idea into a complete 2D or 3D mobile game, complete with progression systems, balanced difficulty, art direction, multiplayer, and more, then refine every element to their standards,” Meta said in a statement. “Your game lives natively in the feeds where people already discover content and connect with friends.”

Distribution through Facebook and Instagram would give user-generated games access to the billions of people across Meta’s family of apps. In the user-generated content (UGC) gaming sector, Roblox Corp. reported 123 million daily active users and has spent the past two years adding generative AI tools for 3D scene creation, scripting and asset generation on mobile and desktop. Epic Games has expanded user creation through Unreal Editor for Fortnite.

Meta has not detailed how much manual control Horizon creators will have over underlying game code, art files or monetization systems. It is positioning the tools to make structured titles with persistent session mechanics rather than short, ephemeral demonstrations. Google’s Project Genie, by contrast, is an experimental AI research project that generates interactive, playable virtual worlds in real time but lacks the backend progression loops and multiplayer networking required by traditional games.

Horizon Create and Horizon Studio will initially be limited to early-access testers. A wider release is expected as Meta gathers feedback on the creation suites and how games load from feeds.
