Manchester United’s Left-Back Crisis Forces Pivot to Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys After Lewis Hall Rejection

Manchester United‘s search for a long-term left-back has intensified after Newcastle United blocked a move for Lewis Hall, pushing the club toward Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys as a primary alternative before the September 1 transfer deadline.

The pursuit reflects a positional crisis that has developed beneath the surface of United’s summer midfield overhaul. Luke Shaw, the first-choice option, has entered the final months of his contract with his fitness record deteriorating across recent seasons. Patrick Dorgu, signed from Lecce in January as a prospective successor, has been deployed primarily as a forward under Michael Carrick. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, both natural right-backs, have provided emergency cover.

United prioritized midfield reconstruction following Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s serious knee injury, securing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba from Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brighton respectively. Santos and Tielemans started the Premier League opener against Hull City, though United lost.

With midfield addressed, the left-back vacancy became the next priority. Hall, 20, represented the ideal profile — young, English, and under contract at Newcastle until 2029. The Magpies’ refusal to negotiate forced a rapid reassessment.

Seys, 21, has emerged as the leading candidate. The Belgian international made 48 appearances for Club Brugge last season, contributing six goals and four assists from left-back. Brugge value him at £30 million; United are attempting to negotiate a lower fee.

Contingency targets include Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, RB Leipzig’s David Raum and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas, though each presents complications. Balde would command a premium fee, Raum is established in the Bundesliga, and Salinas operates in Spain’s second tier.

United face Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday, with the transfer window closing seven days later.
