Bears’ O-Line Depth Tested as Jackson’s Hip Injury Lingers

Luke Newman emerges as the likely starter if the veteran guard misses Thursday's short-week game against New England.

Chicago’s offensive line faces a sudden depth test after guard Jonah Jackson sustained a hip flexor injury during the Bears’ Week 6 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that Jackson is considered week-to-week, casting immediate doubt on his availability for Thursday night’s matchup against the New England Patriots.

“Bears OG Jonah Jackson has a hip flexor injury and is considered week-to-week, per source. Status for TNF in doubt but shouldn’t be long-term,” Fowler wrote.

The compressed turnaround to face New England leaves virtually no recovery window for interior linemen dealing with soft-tissue damage. Hip flexor strains typically sideline players for two to four weeks depending on severity, making the short week particularly punishing. Chicago acquired Jackson from the Los Angeles Rams in March 2025 specifically to stabilize its interior protection. He started every game through the first five weeks of the 2026 season before leaving Sunday’s contest early.

If Jackson cannot clear medical protocols by Thursday, backup Luke Newman becomes the most likely candidate to step into the starting lineup. The Bears scheduled a 10-day rest period following the Patriots game before hosting the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8. That extended break offers a realistic timeline for Jackson to return if his strain proves minor, though rushing a veteran guard back onto a short week carries obvious re-injury risks.

Protecting quarterback Caleb Williams remains the unit’s primary directive. Williams returned from his own injury in Week 6 to lead Chicago past Atlanta, underscoring how quickly personnel losses can alter the team’s trajectory. The front office invested heavily in experienced blockers precisely to insulate their young quarterback from the physical toll of the schedule.

New England presents a separate set of complications. The Patriots’ offensive line has been dealing with several issues of its own heading into the Thursday game, according to reports surrounding both teams’ preparations. Chicago’s defensive front could exploit those vulnerabilities even while its offense shuffles personnel up front.
