Celtic Expose Hearts’ Reckless Tactics in 7-1 Rout

Two early set-piece goals and a disastrous high defensive line turned a top-flight clash into a rout before halftime.

Celtic dismantled Hearts 7-1 at Celtic Park, exposing a tactical setup so aggressive it collapsed within the opening 10 minutes. Two set-piece goals before the clock hit double digits effectively ended the contest, leaving manager Wouter Vrancken to answer for a game plan that prioritized a high defensive line against one of the fastest attacking units in Scottish football.

Martin O’Neill‘s side needed no invitation. Liam Scales opened the scoring with a near-post header from a corner. Minutes later, Kieran Tierney forced the ball home from a few yards out after being left entirely unmarked, with Dane Murray outmuscling Claudio Braga to help set up Benjamin Nygren for the second.

Hearts arrived in Glasgow carrying a dismal away record — two wins in their last 11 league trips dating back to last season, both secured against Hibs. Instead of adjusting, they pushed numbers forward. The result was catastrophic. They held 52% possession, registered 20 shots to Celtic’s 18, and completed 458 passes compared to the hosts’ 423, according to match statistics. None of it mattered. Turnovers in dangerous areas repeatedly handed Celtic free transitions.

Nygren, Callum Osmand, Camilo Duran and Haissem Hassan ran through the visitors at will. Hassan struck the post early after spinning away from Stephen Kingsley. Vrancken made no tactical adjustments to stem the bleeding.

When Hearts briefly threatened to stabilize midway through the first half, Colby Donovan erased the danger. Josh McPake, arguably the most in-form attacker in the country this season, took on Donovan twice in three minutes. Donovan won both duels cleanly, neutralizing Hearts’ primary outlet while the stadium roared.

The psychological damage compounded the physical deficit. Sabri Guendouz gave the ball away cheaply, allowing Duran and Osmand to combine for the third goal. A Jamie McCart error produced another, finished again by Osmand following sharp buildup work from Duran.

Visiting supporters began heading for the exits before the fourth goal went in. They missed Mika Baur weaving past a static McPake and Malachi Fagan-Walcott, his shot deflecting off Kingsley and a sprawling McCart to make it 5-1.

Vrancken pointed to individual errors in his post-match comments but refused to accept responsibility for the overarching tactical approach. Last season, Hearts played Celtic four times, winning two, drawing one and losing once. That resilience has evaporated. Laurent Mendy and Tomas Magnusson were the final culprits as Duran and Nygren added the sixth and seventh goals with seven minutes remaining.

For O’Neill, the victory offers immediate relief following a difficult run of results. The emergence of Osmand alongside Duran and Nygren suggests a potent front three that may not require Kasper Hogh in the starting lineup. Whether Celtic can convert a single dominant afternoon into sustained momentum over the remaining fixtures is the next test.
