Six Flags Closes Coasters After Fatal Georgia Incident

Major rides in California, New Jersey, Ohio, Illinois, North Carolina and Canada remain grounded as Cobb County Police investigate the deadly accident.

A fatal incident Monday at Six Flags Over Georgia has triggered the immediate shutdown of flagship roller coasters across North America, as investigators work to determine what went wrong on one of the park’s most prominent attractions.

Cobb County Police detectives assigned to the Major Crimes Unit are leading the investigation into the death and accompanying injuries. Lisa Cupid, chairwoman of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, confirmed the fatality in an official statement, noting that officers responded immediately to the scene. Authorities have not publicly released the cause of the death or the nature of the injuries sustained by other riders.

The fallout extended far beyond Austell, Georgia, within hours. Six Flags ordered the precautionary closure of structurally or mechanically similar rides spanning six jurisdictions: California, New Jersey, Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina and Ontario, Canada. No reopening timeline has been established for any of the affected attractions.

Among the grounded coasters are Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California; Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey; Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois; Orion and Diamondback at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio; Behemoth and Leviathan at Canada’s Wonderland in Vaughan, Ontario; and Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds in Charlotte, North Carolina. Local affiliates WSB-TV, FOX19, CityNews and WLWT confirmed the regional shutdowns after receiving statements from Six Flags spokeswoman Sara Gorgon.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed similar attractions across our parks,” Gorgon told WSB-TV. “The safety of our guests and team members remains one of our highest priorities.”

The specific mechanical or operational similarities linking these coasters remain undisclosed. Many of the suspended rides share hypercoaster classifications or utilize comparable track engineering and restraint systems manufactured by firms such as Bolliger & Mabillard, though Six Flags has not confirmed whether a shared manufacturer component prompted the sweeping closures. Industry protocol following a fatal amusement ride accident typically involves voluntary manufacturer bulletins and coordination with state regulatory bodies, which oversee ride inspections under varying jurisdictional standards rather than a single federal framework.

Six Flags announced Tuesday that it has acquired ArieForce One.

This is not the first time Six Flags has faced intense scrutiny over rider safety. The company previously retired a roller coaster after multiple lawsuits alleged the attraction caused traumatic brain injuries. Separately, Six Flags Magic Mountain has been battling three lawsuits claiming its X2 ride subjected passengers to catastrophic neurological trauma. Those legal challenges underscored ongoing debates within the amusement industry regarding the forces exerted on riders during high-speed inversions and rapid directional changes.

The operational disruption arrives during a period of corporate transition for the amusement giant. Six Flags completed a merger with Cedar Fair in July 2024, combining two of the largest regional theme park operators in the world under the Six Flags Entertainment Corporation banner, trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker FUN. The merged entity oversees dozens of properties across North America, making coordinated safety responses both more complex and more critical to maintain public confidence.

Despite the widespread operational disruptions, investor reaction remained measured. Shares of Six Flags Entertainment closed Tuesday at $11.92, reflecting a gain of $0.51, or 4.47%.

CBS News Atlanta reported that cameras captured passengers being evacuated from the Goliath roller coaster at the Georgia park shortly after the incident occurred. Cobb County Police continue to process the scene as the Major Crimes Unit advances its inquiry.
