La Liga’s New Economic Rule Offers Barcelona a Path for Lewandowski Extension

A recently approved clause in La Liga's financial regulations could allow FC Barcelona to renew Robert Lewandowski's contract beyond 2026, bypassing traditional spending limits under specific conditions.

La Liga announced new economic control regulations weeks ago. These rules include a specific clause. This clause opens new possibilities for FC Barcelona. Learn more about La Liga’s financial rules.

This particular clause addresses a major question for the Catalan club next season. It directly concerns the future of Polish striker Robert Lewandowski.

Lewandowski’s current contract expires on June 30, 2026. The new measure approved by La Liga might allow him to continue with the Blaugrana for an additional season.

Article 103 of the new economic control regulations states specific conditions. A club can renew one player’s contract without facing financial limit conditions. The player’s age does not factor into this decision. This provision applies to only one player on the team roster. The sole requirement is that the player’s salary must not exceed 8% of the team’s maximum cost limit.

Robert Lewandowski’s current basic salary is approximately €20 million per season. Barcelona’s last spending limit, set in September, stood at €351.248 million.

Lewandowski’s current salary represents about 5.6% of the total salary cost. La Liga approved this total for Barcelona.

The club must pay “fair play” contributions for this operation. These payments will be due in the season following the contract extension, specifically during the 2027-2028 campaign.
