FIFA Unveils Record $727 Million Prize Fund for Expanded 2026 World Cup

FIFA’s Council today approved a record $727 million in prize money for the 2026 World Cup. The international football governing body announced the total distribution to participating teams on Wednesday.

The 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams for the first time. Matches will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Seven Arab nations have already secured qualification, with Iraq holding a playoff opportunity.

A FIFA statement released today, Wednesday, confirmed the financial details. The Council meeting in Qatar followed the final draw held on December 5, 2025, in Washington D.C., which generated significant anticipation.

$655 million will go directly to the 48 participating teams as prize money. This represents a 50% increase compared to the previous tournament edition.

What are the prize money for the 2026 World Cup?

The 2026 World Cup winner will collect $50 million. The second-place team will receive $33 million. Third place earns $29 million, while the fourth-place team gets $27 million.

$19 million awaits teams finishing between fifth and eighth place. Teams ranked ninth through sixteenth will each receive $15 million.

Teams placing 17th through 32nd will receive $11 million each. Any team eliminated in the first round will still secure $9 million.

Each participating team will also get an additional $1.5 million. This sum covers preparation costs for the tournament.
