Liquid staking giant Lido has rolled out a major protocol upgrade, Curated Module v2, aimed at radically consolidating Ethereum<\/a>‘s consensus layer by raising the maximum effective balance a single validator can manage.<\/p>\n

By incorporating support for Ethereum\u2019s 0x02 withdrawal credentials, the updated infrastructure allows operators to expand a validator\u2019s effective balance from the long-standing baseline of 32 ETH up to 2,048 ETH.<\/p>\n

According to internal projections from Lido, shifting protocol stake to higher-capacity credentials could cut the overall number of active Ethereum validators on the network from roughly 880,000 down to around 628,000\u2014a footprint reduction of approximately one-third. The protocol noted that this migration has not started yet.<\/p>\n

The consolidation specifically targets Ethereum\u2019s consensus layer, where a smaller validator pool reduces peer-to-peer messaging overhead and computational strain on nodes running the network. Execution-layer mechanics\u2014such as smart contract execution, block gas limits, and transaction fees\u2014will remain unaffected by the change.<\/p>\n

Ever since the launch of the Beacon Chain in December 2020, Ethereum enforced a strict maximum effective balance of 32 ETH per validator node. As total staked capital expanded past 30 million ETH, institutions and staking protocols were forced to spin up tens of thousands of separate virtual validators, placing increasing pressure on Ethereum consensus nodes<\/a> tasked with broadcasting and verifying network attestations.<\/p>\n

To address this scalability bottleneck, core developers designed EIP-7251, allowing validator balances to scale up to 2,048 ETH. Lido, which commands market leadership through its liquid derivative token stETH, represents the largest single entity adopting these higher balance caps.<\/p>\n

Alongside the credential shift, Curated Module v2 restructures the operational framework for Lido\u2019s underlying node operators. The upgrade integrates node operator bonding requirements and penalty mechanisms to enforce financial accountability.<\/p>\n

Going forward, Lido said future stake distribution could place more weight on factors such as node operators performance, fees, and contributions to the ecosystem.<\/p>\n

For end users holding stETH, no action is required because the upgrade will be handled directly at the protocol level.<\/p>\n
