In April, Toyota replaced chief executive Koji Sato with former chief financial officer Kenta Kon after recording a $9 billion profit hit tied to foreign tariffs. Honda also posted its first-ever annual net loss in company history while scaling back its electric vehicle roadmap.

At Nissan, which recorded a $3.54 billion loss during its last fiscal year as revenues slid 4% to $79.7 billion, a corporate overhaul is taking shape under Ivan Espinosa. The 46-year-old Mexican national was named CEO in early 2025 following the departure of Makoto Uchida. Uchida stepped down after high-stakes merger negotiations between Nissan and Honda dissolved over control disagreements in late 2024.

Espinosa, who began his career at Nissan as a product engineer in Mexico in 2003 before holding leadership positions across Latin America, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Japan, inherited a business hampered by overproduction, bloated cost structures, and lagging product development cycles.

To stabilize operations, Nissan rolled out its “Re:Nissan” initiative in May 2025. The strategy mandates 500 billion yen ($3.1 billion) in total cost reductions, 20,000 workforce layoffs, the shuttering of seven manufacturing plants globally, and a target to compress vehicle development timelines to slightly over two years.

Central to Nissan’s reorganization is a bifurcated strategy focused almost exclusively on the United States and China. North America accounts for over 40% of Nissan’s total unit sales. Following his return to the company in 2025, Nissan Americas chair Christian Meunier cut $2 billion in fixed and variable operational costs across the region within a 12-month span.

External political headwinds hit the North American strategy in March 2025 when U.S. President Donald Trump imposed 25% import tariffs on passenger vehicles, a rate subsequently lowered to 15% for Japanese imports following bilateral trade talks. Rising friction around U.S. trade policy challenged cross-border production networks established under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

By re-engineering supply networks down to individual subcomponents to identify domestic content, Nissan reduced its U.S. tariff exposure from $4 billion to $1.5 billion within a year. Low-margin entry-level vehicles like the Sentra and Kicks remain stationed in Mexican production facilities to preserve profit margins while catering to price-sensitive American buyers.

During the first six months of 2026, Nissan delivered 361,563 vehicles to buyers in the U.S., reflecting an 8.3% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2025.

In China, where intense domestic competition from electric vehicle makers pushed Nissan’s sales down 6.3% to 653,000 units during its previous fiscal year, the company maintains a target of reaching one million annual sales by 2030. Nissan executive leadership has increasingly leveraged Chinese operational practices to accelerate global workflows.

Alfonso Albaisa, senior vice president for global design, restructured internal development processes by cutting the executive approvals required for design decisions from 12 down to three, while swapping physical clay models for artificial intelligence and digital design systems. As part of this realignment, Nissan converted its Los Angeles studio into a prototype unit driven by seven designers utilizing high-performance computing setups.

Espinosa cautioned that operating entirely isolated engineering operations across individual target markets remains economically unviable, maintaining that corporate headquarters must establish central guardrails while allowing regional engineering teams to innovate shared product platforms.

Read also:

Taiwanese Tech Giant Wistron Rides Nvidia AI Wave to Record $70 Billion Revenue Surge

Hardware and Infrastructure Providers Surge to $1 Trillion Valuation Driven by AI Data Center Boom

Hiring Managers Favor Side Hustles Over College Degrees as Gen Z Resale Boom Reshapes Recruitment

Legacy automakers across the globe are confronting an unprecedented wave of structural and trade shocks, forcing long-established brands to retreat from unified global manufacturing models toward distinct regional operations.
