SpaceX<\/a> executed a major milestone in deep-space hardware testing on Friday as its massive Starship rocket completed a suborbital flight spanning half the globe, ending with a soft splashdown in the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n

Lifting off from the company’s Starbase facility on the southern tip of Texas, the 124-meter (407-foot) vehicle successfully deployed 20 advanced Starlink<\/a> test satellites into space before enduring atmospheric reentry intact. Standing taller than any operational rocket in history, Starship is powered by 33 Raptor engines delivering upwards of 16.7 million pounds of thrust\u2014nearly double the peak power of the historic Saturn V moon rocket.<\/p>\n

During the hourlong test mission\u2014the 13th overall for the Starship program and the second utilizing the upgraded Version 3 hardware\u2014the upper stage traveled more than 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometers) at an altitude of 124 miles (200 kilometers). After deploying its payload, the stainless-steel vehicle performed an upright hover above the Indian Ocean before gently settling into the water, where it remained floating.<\/p>\n

“We got all the heat shield data we needed and then some!” SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk<\/a> posted on X following the splashdown.<\/p>\n

To evaluate thermal protection under extreme atmospheric entry conditions\u2014where temperatures regularly exceed 1,400 degrees Celsius (2,500 degrees Fahrenheit)\u2014engineers fitted the heat shield with specialized telemetry sensors and intentionally painted select thermal tiles white to simulate missing tiles. Six of the deployed Starlink satellites equipped with onboard cameras beamed crisp imagery of the descending spacecraft back to mission controllers.<\/p>\n

SpaceX engineer Kate Tice hailed the outcome as the best atmospheric reentry performance recorded in the vehicle’s test history, calling the mission “lucky flight 13.” Previous tests had ended in midair structural failures or energetic explosions upon ocean contact.<\/p>\n

The mission also tested operational satellite deployment capabilities. The 20 experimental payloads established radio and laser communications within a tight 20-minute operational window prior to reentering the atmosphere. SpaceX currently operates the world’s largest satellite internet network, maintaining a constellation of over 10,000 active Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit to deliver high-speed broadband connection worldwide.<\/p>\n

While the upper stage achieved its key objectives, the Super Heavy booster encountered technical difficulties during its return sequence. After successfully firing all 33 engines at liftoff\u2014following the replacement of six engines that triggered a launch abort on July 16\u2014the booster failed to reignite a sufficient number of engines during its landing burn, causing it to descend too fast and slam into the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n

SpaceX ultimately intends to recover both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage on land using a pair of giant mechanical arms at the launch pad designed to snag returning stages out of mid-air, avoiding the weight penalty of traditional landing gear.<\/p>\n

The flight was closely monitored by NASA<\/a>, which relies on Starship as the landing system for its lunar exploration initiatives. Under current schedules, Artemis III aims to land four astronauts\u2014three Americans and one Italian\u2014on the lunar surface, requiring the crew to practice docking their capsule with Starship in orbit next year as part of NASA’s Artemis program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman expressed optimism regarding the mission’s findings, noting on X that he was “excited for what will be learned from this mission.” The launch had faced several delays prior to Friday’s liftoff, including technical aborts and adverse weather caused by Tropical Storm Bertha.<\/p>\n
