Belarusian citizens and residents will be prohibited from owning, controlling, or holding executive positions at European cryptocurrency companies starting August 25, under an expanded sanctions regime enacted by the European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Adopted under Council Decision (CFSP) 2026\/1847, the new directive enters into force on July 24 before full crypto restrictions take effect the following month. The legislation significantly broadens existing restrictions that previously applied only to crypto wallet, account, and custody providers. Under the updated framework, the prohibition extends to all service categories governed by the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets<\/a> (MiCA<\/a>) regulation, encompassing exchange operations, order execution, asset placement, portfolio management, and investment advisory services.<\/p>\n

The regulatory tightening follows the official conclusion of MiCA\u2019s transitional grace period on July 1, a milestone that required unauthorized digital asset firms across the 27-member bloc to wind down European operations or face immediate enforcement. Designed to unify financial oversight across member states, MiCA introduces stringent governance standards intended to prevent regulatory arbitrage in digital markets.<\/p>\n

Brussels has progressively zeroed in on digital asset channels to prevent sanction evasion stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Because of Belarus’s close military and economic ties with Moscow, European authorities have consistently aligned restrictions on Minsk to eliminate secondary financial bypass routes.<\/p>\n

In conjunction with the Belarusian restrictions, the European Council<\/a> expanded its 21st sanctions package against Russia by imposing transaction bans on 14 foreign crypto platforms, up from an 11-platform proposal in June. The new sanctions framework also creates a formal mechanism permitting the EU to block any foreign crypto service provider suspected of facilitating illicit Russian transactions.<\/p>\n

The crackdown reflects a broader Western effort to curb cross-border financial channels assisting sanctioned entities. In late May, British authorities sanctioned Panama-registered Huobi Global S.A., the parent company of the HTX<\/a> exchange, over alleged involvement in financial networks connected to sanctioned firms Garantex and A7. Although HTX publicly rejected the allegations and maintained that strict regulatory adherence is its top priority, international regulators continue to heighten scrutiny on off-shore platforms linked to regional evasion risks.<\/p>\n
