Ford Motor Co. is partnering with Apple Inc. to integrate Apple Maps natively into its upcoming Universal Electric Vehicle platform, leveraging the tech giant’s mapping tools to strengthen both in-dash navigation and future hands-free driving capabilities.<\/p>\n
Under the deal announced Thursday, Ford will utilize Apple’s new MapKit for Automotive SDK across its next-generation EV architecture. The platform will make its commercial debut in 2027 with a midsize electric vehicle targeted at an accessible $30,000 price point. Ford vehicle owners will access the system natively without requiring a separate Apple software subscription.<\/p>\n
The integration extends well beyond standard turn-by-turn directions and natural language voice commands. Crucially, Ford plans to feed road-level spatial data collected through Apple’s SDK into its proprietary autonomous vehicle technologies, including the next iteration of its BlueCruise hands-free driving system. The system also powers enhanced search tools using detailed place cards and real-time traffic updates.<\/p>\n
“Apple Maps delivers the best map experience in the world, and we\u2019re excited to bring the power of Maps\u2019 navigation technology to Ford\u2019s innovative Universal Electric Vehicle Platform,” said Eddy Cue, Apple\u2019s senior vice president of services and health. The strategic move comes as automakers increasingly transition toward software-defined vehicles, where electronic architecture and cloud-connected software dictate functionality. To support this shift, Ford’s platform incorporates a modern zonal architecture designed to streamline software deployment and hardware integration across vehicle lines.<\/p>\n
Ford CEO Jim Farley emphasized that the upcoming midsize EV is designed to re-define advanced technology as simple, useful, and truly attainable for customers. “Apple Maps has delivered a world-class product, and we’re honored to be among the first to embed it directly into a vehicle, helping define intuitive, capable driving,” Farley said, noting the system will operate alongside the Ford app and full software suite.<\/p>\n
Development of Ford’s underlying self-driving tech is being spearheaded by Latitude AI, a wholly-owned subsidiary established by the automaker. Latitude AI relies on the Ford Large Driving Model, an artificial intelligence system trained on millions of miles of real-world driving data. By pairing Latitude’s scalable hardware and software design with Apple’s high-precision map data, Ford aims to accelerate the deployment of hands-free driving assistance mapped to standards set by SAE International<\/a> for automated driving systems.<\/p>\n The announcement comes amid broader industry efforts to build lower-cost electric vehicles that remain software-competitive.
