European antitrust regulators have ordered Google<\/a> parent company Alphabet<\/a> to pay $1 billion (\u20ac890 million) in penalties for violating digital competition laws by favoring its own search services and placing restrictive conditions on mobile app developers.<\/p>\n

The action, taken by the European Commission<\/a>, consists of two distinct fines: a \u20ac460 million penalty concerning search engine manipulation and a \u20ac430 million sanction related to anti-steering practices on the Google Play Store<\/a>. Regulators determined that Mountain View systematically placed its own commercial offerings\u2014including shopping, hotel bookings, and transportation tools\u2014above competing services in search results. Furthermore, the Commission found that Google prevented Android<\/a> software developers from informing users about cheaper payment channels outside its official app storefront.<\/p>\n

The penalties stem from enforcement of the European Union’s landmark Digital Markets Act<\/a> (DMA), a regulatory framework designed to curb the dominance of major technology platforms designated as market “gatekeepers.” Google was officially labeled a gatekeeper in 2023, triggering strict obligations to maintain fair competition across core platform services like online search and mobile operating systems.<\/p>\n

Brussels has given Google 60 days to adjust its commercial practices to ensure non-discriminatory treatment for third-party search listings and allow app developers to freely direct consumers to external websites. Failure to satisfy EU demands could trigger daily periodic penalty payments of up to 5% of Alphabet’s total global revenue. In extreme cases of repeated non-compliance, the DMA empowers regulators to levy fines reaching 10% of a gatekeeper’s worldwide annual turnover.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging ongoing conversations with EU officials, Google expressed strong opposition to the enforcement actions. The technology giant has already begun testing revisions to search results, AI Overviews, and developer agreements to align with EU rules. However, Kent Walker, Google’s president of global affairs, pushed back against the ruling, arguing that DMA mandates force “product degradation driven by a small group of self-serving complainants, with European businesses and consumers taking the hit.”<\/p>\n

The monetary penalties reflect an escalating regulatory push in Europe to dismantle walled gardens maintained by major tech platforms. The enforcement follow-up builds on an inquiry formally opened in 2024 and complements other recent regulatory mandates, including a directive forcing Google to provide third-party AI chatbots with the same Android system access granted to its native Gemini<\/a> platform.<\/p>\n
