Samsung<\/a> has officially expanded its software maintenance commitment for its flagship wearable line, guaranteeing five years of major operating system upgrades for the newly launched Galaxy Watch 9<\/a> and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The revised policy guarantees that both smartwatches will receive system upgrades through 2031, debuting with Wear OS 7. Initially reported by 9to5Google and confirmed via SamMobile, the move aligns Samsung’s major OS upgrade cadence with its five-year security patch pledge.<\/p>\n

This update adds a full year of support compared to the previous generation Galaxy Watch 8, which was slated for four years of OS updates. It also sets a new baseline among Android wristwear, surpassing competing devices like the Google Pixel Watch, which currently receives three years of guaranteed system updates.<\/p>\n

While smartphone makers have increasingly pushed software support cycles up to seven years, smartwatches have traditionally lagged behind due to hardware constraints, smaller battery capacities, and rapid battery degradation. Providing extended software maintenance on the Wear OS platform<\/a> helps extend consumer product utility, ensuring devices remain compatible with evolving health applications, safety tools, and security standards over time.<\/p>\n

The announcement followed Samsung’s recent Galaxy Unpacked<\/a> event, where the manufacturer detailed hardware upgrades across both watch lines. The standard Galaxy Watch 9 received a 20 percent increase in battery capacity over its predecessor. Meanwhile, the outdoor-focused Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 features a display capable of reaching 5,000 nits of peak brightness, up from 3,000 nits on the previous model.<\/p>\n

Both new smartwatches also incorporate updated AI-powered health-tracking capabilities, reflecting the ongoing deep collaboration between Samsung and Google to strengthen the wrist-based Android ecosystem.<\/p>\n
