Florida\u2019s economy has climbed to become the 14th largest in the world, with its gross domestic product reaching $1.8 trillion. According to new data released by the Florida Chamber Foundation<\/a>, the Sunshine State\u2019s economy expanded by 6.3% over the past year, overtaking sovereign nations such as Australia and Mexico in global economic output.<\/p>\n

This economic milestone places Florida just behind South Korea, which currently holds the 13th spot. To surpass South Korea, Florida’s economy would need to grow by approximately 2%, while overtaking Canada\u2014currently ranked 10th\u2014would require an additional 21% expansion. Comparing individual U.S. states to sovereign global economies is a well-established benchmark; for instance, California and Texas routinely rank alongside major global powers like India, Germany, and Brazil due to their massive industrial and financial bases.<\/p>\n

A key driver of this growth is the continuous influx of wealth and residents. While daily population migration has normalized from its pandemic-era peak to between 500 and 600 people per day, the state continues to attract capital at an unprecedented rate. According to the Florida Chamber of Commerce<\/a>, wealth migration into the state remains steady at more than $4 million every hour. This shift is largely fueled by affluent individuals and businesses relocating from high-tax states like New York, California, and Illinois.<\/p>\n

Florida Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Mark Wilson attributed the state’s economic momentum to its business-friendly environment, characterized by low taxes and minimal regulatory hurdles. Wilson emphasized that the state\u2019s fiscal strategy focuses on private-sector growth while maintaining low public debt. Currently, Florida holds the lowest state debt per capita in the United States, standing at less than $1,000 per resident. In contrast, New York carries a state debt burden of more than $6,500 per capita, highlighting the divergent fiscal paths chosen by the two states.<\/p>\n

While tourism, agriculture, and construction have historically anchored Florida’s economy, the state is rapidly diversifying. Chamber data indicates that Florida now ranks first in the nation for new business startups and manufacturing job growth. Emerging sectors driving this expansion include aerospace, defense, financial technology (fintech), healthcare, logistics, and Central Florida\u2019s specialized modeling-and-simulation industry, which is valued at $11.6 billion.<\/p>\n

Addressing these concerns, Wilson noted that while massive wealth migration inevitably impacts local prices, it also generates jobs and broader economic opportunities. He argued that the cost of living is offset by non-monetary benefits, such as lower crime rates, pointing out that Miami has become one of the safest major metropolitan areas in the country. To mitigate housing pressures, the Chamber is partnering with local leaders to develop affordable workforce housing solutions and improve the state’s education system.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, business leaders aim to secure a spot for Florida among the world\u2019s top 10 economies by 2030. This objective is outlined in the Florida 2030 Blueprint<\/a>, a strategic plan targeting key sectors such as cybersecurity, commercial space, life sciences, and agricultural technology to ensure sustainable, long-term economic expansion.<\/p>\n
