While initial assumptions pointed to the rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence as the primary cause, new findings suggest a more complex systemic issue that transcends technological disruption.<\/p>\n<p>The research, derived from the &ldquo;Canaries Dashboard,&rdquo; tracks the employment outcomes of 4.6 million workers across more than 730 occupations. Led by economists Erik Brynjolfsson and Nela Richardson, the project focuses on workers aged 22 to 25. This demographic is considered a leading indicator of labor market shifts because entry-level roles often consist of the very tasks&mdash;such as scheduling, basic coding, and data formatting&mdash;that are most susceptible to automation.<\/p>\n<p>Since the public debut of ChatGPT in late 2022, employment growth for this age group has diverged sharply from the broader U.S. labor market. However, the latest update to the dashboard reveals that young women are experiencing slower employment growth than men across every level of AI exposure. Even in industries where AI has a minimal footprint, the disparity remains stark.<\/p>\n<p>In the least-exposed job categories, employment for young women grew by only 1.3% annually since late 2022, compared to a 2.7% growth rate for young men. In high-exposure roles, the situation is more severe: women&rsquo;s employment in these sectors shrank by 4.5% annually, while men in similar roles saw a smaller decline of 2.5%.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers conclude that the gender gap is not a direct result of AI &ldquo;treating&rdquo; men and women differently within the same roles. Instead, the primary driver is occupational composition. Women are statistically more likely to work in roles with high AI exposure, such as customer service and administrative support. Approximately 43.8% of women in the study work in the most AI-exposed job tier, compared to 32.4% of men.<\/p>\n<p>This finding adds a new layer to the ongoing debate over whether AI will &ldquo;augment&rdquo; or &ldquo;automate&rdquo; human labor. Previous studies from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Labour Organization<\/a> (ILO) have suggested that women globally face a higher risk of automation. The Canaries data confirms that women are indeed in the line of fire due to their career choices, but it also highlights that they are losing ground in low-tech sectors as well.<\/p>\n<p>The broader economic context suggests that entry-level hiring is undergoing a structural transformation. As companies integrate generative AI to handle routine administrative tasks, the &ldquo;on-ramp&rdquo; for young professionals is narrowing. For young women, this challenge is compounded by existing labor market structures, including industry concentration and education mix, which may be contributing to the flatter growth curve observed across the board.<\/p>\n<p>While the study clarifies that AI is not the sole villain in the gender hiring gap, it underscores a precarious moment for Gen Z women.
