He first utilized IMAX 15-perforation 70mm cameras for select action sequences in The Dark Knight<\/em> (2008) and expanded their use in subsequent films like Interstellar<\/em> (2014), Dunkirk<\/em> (2017), and Oppenheimer<\/em> (2023). The latter grossed over $180 million on IMAX screens alone, proving that audiences would seek out specialized formats for historical and dramatic narratives, not just traditional action blockbusters.<\/p>\nDespite the soaring demand for the 70mm presentation of “The Odyssey,” audiences face a physical bottleneck. There are currently only 41 theaters worldwide equipped to project 15-perforation 70mm IMAX film.<\/p>\n
When asked about the possibility of expanding this network, Gelfond explained that building and maintaining these analog systems is highly restrictive. He compared the projectors to luxury vintage vehicles, noting that many necessary mechanical parts are no longer in active production.<\/p>\n
“It’s almost like a Rolls-Royce,” Gelfond explained, pointing out that the complex economic model and scarcity of components limit the locations where such theaters can realistically operate.
