Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman is pivoting into major medical philanthropy, committing hundreds of millions of dollars to establish a massive brain research center on Manhattan\u2019s Upper West Side. The initiative, spurred by a sudden and severe family medical emergency, represents one of the largest private commitments to neuroscience in New York City in recent years.<\/p>\n
Through the Pershing Square Foundation<\/a>, Ackman has acquired 125 West End Avenue for $190 million. The 400,000-square-foot building, currently a life sciences facility known as West End Labs, will serve as the headquarters for the newly formed Ackman Oxman Institute. Additionally, the foundation has secured a contract to purchase an adjacent property at 320 West 66th Street for $70 million. With the acquisition of extra development rights, the completed campus could eventually span nearly 700,000 square feet.<\/p>\n The scale of the project positions it to rival some of the city\u2019s most prominent medical research institutions, such as Rockefeller University<\/a>. The new institute will focus on a wide array of disciplines related to brain health, including neurosurgery, genetics, nutrition, rehabilitation, and longevity.<\/p>\n The catalyst for the massive investment was deeply personal. In February, Ackman\u2019s 26-year-old daughter, Lucy, suffered a severe brain hemorrhage and went undiscovered in her apartment for 15 hours. Though such prolonged pressure on the brain is typically fatal, she survived. Ackman attributes her survival and ongoing recovery to aggressive, experimental medical interventions, which included injecting mitochondria into her eye to preserve her optic nerve. <\/p>\n This experience, combined with the loss of his mother-in-law to Alzheimer\u2019s disease five years ago, prompted Ackman and his wife, Neri Oxman, to revive plans for a dedicated brain research center. While they had previously considered the West End Avenue location, the financial and operational hurdles were initially too steep.<\/p>\n A recent downturn in the commercial life sciences real estate<\/a> market, however, lowered property acquisition costs. At the same time, a shifting academic landscape has made top-tier scientists more open to leaving traditional university roles for well-funded private research initiatives, making the project viable now.<\/p>\n The Ackman Oxman Institute will operate in close partnership with the Mount Sinai<\/a> Health System, the medical institution whose physicians treated Ackman\u2019s daughter. The institute\u2019s board already features high-profile figures, including Nobel laureate and cell biologist Jim Rothman, as well as Stanford University neuroscientist Andrew Huberman<\/a>. <\/p>\n The board is currently conducting a search for the institute’s inaugural chief executive officer. Ackman expects initial operations at the main West End Avenue building to begin by the end of this year. While the Pershing Square Foundation\u2014which has distributed over $1 billion in grants and investments since its inception\u2014is providing the initial funding, the institute aims to establish a self-sustaining financial model by fostering an ecosystem of affiliated startups and venture capital investments.<\/p>\n
