South Korean financial regulators have investigated more than 40 cases of illicit cryptocurrency trading over the past two years, signaling a major crackdown on financial crimes within the domestic digital asset market<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to details shared by Lee Eog-won, the Chairman of the Financial Services Commission<\/a>, 30 of these cases have been forwarded to investigative authorities. Since the country’s landmark Virtual Asset User Protection Act<\/a> took effect in July 2024, regulators have successfully identified 25 suspects involved in fraudulent schemes. The average unlawful profit generated from these illicit activities stood at approximately 1.4 billion Korean won, equivalent to roughly $940,000.<\/p>\n

The disclosure comes as South Korea marks the second anniversary of the enactment of the legislation, which was designed to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for a sector that previously operated largely outside of formal legal boundaries. The collapse of major global and domestic crypto projects in recent years, such as the Terra-Luna crash of 2022, served as a catalyst for South Korean lawmakers to fast-track investor protection measures.<\/p>\n

Under the current legal framework, virtual asset service providers<\/a> operating in South Korea are subject to strict operational guidelines. These platforms are legally required to segregate user deposits and digital assets from their own corporate holdings, storing client funds securely within traditional banking institutions.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the Virtual Asset User Protection Act targets systemic market abuses. It outlaws activities such as insider trading, wash trading, and market manipulation<\/a>, while granting the Financial Services Commission<\/a> enhanced authority to inspect and supervise local digital asset exchanges.<\/p>\n

To stay ahead of evolving financial crimes, the regulator plans to upgrade its oversight capabilities. The agency aims to deploy artificial intelligence to improve its market surveillance and monitoring systems, allowing investigators to proactively identify suspicious trading patterns and mitigate risks in highly volatile market segments.<\/p>\n
