Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated Thursday that the aim is to increase Danish forces in Greenland, with other NATO allies invited to participate on a rotational basis.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe intention is to create a more permanent military presence,\u201d Poulsen told Danish public broadcaster DR. Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Finland, and the Netherlands have indicated they will conduct limited troop deployments. European diplomats noted the initiative aims to demonstrate to the U.S. that Denmark and other nations are seriously addressing Arctic security, rather than responding to Trump\u2019s threats to take control of Greenland.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met in Washington with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They agreed to establish a high-level working group set to convene in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen characterized the meeting as \u201cnot easy,\u201d acknowledging a \u201cfundamental disagreement\u201d persists with the U.S. She thanked Denmark\u2019s partners for deploying troops, adding:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe defense and protection of Greenland is a common concern for the entire NATO alliance.\u201d French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday that approximately 15 French soldiers would soon be augmented by land, air, and naval forces. He added that Europe \u201cis shaken in some of its certainties,\u201d citing, among other factors, the emergence of \u201ccompetitors it did not expect to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both France and Canada are set to open consulates in Greenland in the coming weeks. Germany announced it would deploy 13 reconnaissance soldiers, the United Kingdom one officer, Norway two soldiers, and Sweden several. Helsinki is dispatching two liaison officers, and the Netherlands one officer. \u201cThese forces could not stop an American invasion. There is no chance.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the message must be subtle. This is being done to show that we are strengthening security in the Arctic and that more can be accomplished,\u201d a senior diplomat from one of the participating countries stated. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius asserted that Russia and China are increasingly utilizing the Arctic for military purposes, a development NATO will not permit.<\/p>\n
The 13 German soldiers were scheduled to fly to Denmark on Thursday and proceed to Greenland the following day. \u201cWhat is decisive for me is that, in our joint reconnaissance activities in Greenland under Danish leadership within NATO, we coordinate very closely, especially with our American partners,\u201d Pistorius added.<\/p>\n
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated Thursday that discussions concerning Arctic security are primarily a NATO matter. \u201cGreenland can count on us, politically, economically, and financially,\u201d she said. \u201cWe will\u2026 continue our work on Arctic security with our allies, our partners, including the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vladimir Barbin, Russia\u2019s ambassador to Denmark, criticized the initiative, arguing that Arctic security must involve all states in the region. He told Danish TV station TV2: \u201cBy attracting NATO to the Arctic, including Greenland, Denmark is promoting a confrontational approach that always leads to weakening rather than strengthening security in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n
Poulsen indicated a \u201crotation\u201d system, with various countries participating for set periods for exercises. These operations could involve protecting critical infrastructure and assisting in the deployment of fighter jets and ships in Greenland, according to the Ministry of Defense.
