The disaster occurred Sunday along a busy stretch of the highway connecting Guadalajara and Tepic in the state of Jalisco. The corridor is a vital commercial and transit route linking Mexico’s second-largest city with the Pacific coast, a region frequently traversed by heavy freight trucks and tourists alike.<\/p>\n
According to local emergency services, the chain-reaction collision began with a relatively minor rear-end accident involving two tractor-trailers. As traffic ground to a halt and emergency personnel began responding, a third tractor-trailer descended upon the scene.<\/p>\n
Mexican authorities reported that this third heavy vehicle suffered a sudden failure in its braking system, leaving the driver unable to stop before slamming into the queue of stationary vehicles.<\/p>\n
“According to initial reports, a trailer reportedly suffered a failure in its braking system and ended up crashing into several vehicles that were stopped due to a prior incident,” Mexico’s Army, Air Force and National Guard said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n
The impact of the second collision triggered a massive fire that rapidly engulfed several of the vehicles involved, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the air and complicating rescue efforts.<\/p>\n
There is a slight discrepancy in the official death toll. While the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Nayarit reported that 10 people had died, a joint update from Mexico’s Army, Air Force and National Guard placed the number of fatalities at nine. Among the victims were two minors, according to reporting by Reuters.<\/p>\n

Four American citizens caught in the multi-vehicle pileup survived with minor injuries. They were quickly evacuated from the scene by a private ambulance.<\/p>\n
“Four patients in minor condition, all U.S. citizens, were transferred to the Arboledas Hospital in Guadalajara by a private ambulance from the highway,” Jalisco Civil Protection confirmed.<\/p>\n
Additionally, two National Guard members sustained serious injuries in the crash. They were also transported to a hospital in Guadalajara for urgent medical treatment.<\/p>\n
The force of the collision and the ensuing blaze caused widespread destruction. Authorities confirmed that three private vehicles and two tractor-trailer trucks were completely destroyed by the fire. Two additional private vehicles and an official Dodge Charger patrol unit belonging to the National Guard sustained significant material damage.<\/p>\n

The driver of the runaway tractor-trailer survived the crash and was taken into custody. Local media outlet El Financiero reported that the driver was detained by the National Guard as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n
