Now, the second-generation T-Roc has arrived with a clear mission: to prove that the brand’s most popular SUV can grow up without losing the accessibility that made it a hit. While the United States gets the Taos, Europe receives this—a more sophisticated, Golf-based high-rider that bridges the gap between segments.

The growth of the second-generation T-Roc is evident before you even pull the door handle. Stretching 138 mm (5.4 inches) longer than its 2017 predecessor, with a wheelbase extended by 39 mm (1.54 in), this new iteration moves away from the “subcompact” label and edges closer to the compact class. Our test vehicle, a Euro-market Life trim, arrived with the more potent mild-hybrid 1.5-liter engine, a powertrain that highlights VW’s current focus on efficiency through electrification.

Visually, the T-Roc has traded some of its predecessor’s clean minimalism for a more assertive, if busier, aesthetic. The aggressive headlights and bulky honeycomb plastic trim on the front bumper lack the understated class of the original, though the silhouette remains familiar. The signature decorative stripe still sweeps into the shark-fin C-pillar, and the rear shoulders remain toned and muscular. At the back, the evolution continues with a steeply raked rear window, full-width taillights, and an illuminated badge that brings it in line with the latest ID. family design language.

Our Life-trim tester featured several optional upgrades, including multi-spoke 17-inch wheels, the high-tech IQ.Matrix LED headlights, and an illuminated grille. While it lacked the bi-tone paint found on the Style trim or the aggressive, lowered stance of the flagship R-Line, it presented a sensible, middle-of-the-road appearance that likely represents the bulk of T-Roc sales.

Inside, the cabin is a significant step forward in terms of space and perceived quality. The longer wheelbase pays immediate dividends in legroom, and the dashboard has finally ditched the color-matched hard plastics of the old model for softer fabric trim. Combined with ambient lighting, the environment feels more premium, though the illusion fades as you move your hands lower. Hard plastics still dominate the door cards and lower console, falling slightly short of the expectations set by the vehicle’s price point.

The tech suite is headlined by a free-standing 12.9-inch infotainment display paired with an 8-inch digital instrument cluster. While the touchscreen is crisp and responsive, it unfortunately retains the controversial touch sliders for volume and temperature. However, VW has listened to critics elsewhere: the steering wheel features actual clicky buttons, and a new cylindrical switch on the center console provides a tactile way to adjust volume or toggle drive modes. Other modern touches include an EV-style gear stalk on the steering column, which frees up space for a wireless charging pad, and the inclusion of rear climate vents—a rare luxury in this segment.

Practicality remains a core strength. The boot offers a capacity of 475 lt (16.8 cubic feet), which is a 30-liter improvement over the previous model and a significant 94 liters more than the standard Golf. While rear headroom is merely adequate, the extra legroom makes the T-Roc a viable family car for those who find the Golf too cramped but the Tiguan too cumbersome.

On the road, the T-Roc benefits immensely from the upgraded MQB Evo architecture. The ride quality and noise insulation have been elevated to a level that feels closer to the Tiguan than the entry-level T-Cross. The standard suspension setup strikes a fine balance, absorbing road imperfections with poise without allowing excessive body roll in the corners. The 148-hp electrified powertrain is a highlight; it operates with a smoothness that mimics a full hybrid, frequently shutting down the combustion engine during coasting to save fuel.

In the Greek market, pricing for the entry-level 114 hp mild-hybrid starts at €28,590 ($33,200). Stepping up to our 148 hp Life trim requires €31,390 ($36,500), while the sportier R-Line tops out at €35,990 ($41,900). While the 1.5 eTSI is the current volume leader, VW will soon expand the lineup with a self-charging hybrid and a performance-oriented T-Roc R featuring a 2.0-liter turbo and all-wheel drive.

Official teaser sketches of the upcoming VW T-Roc R.

The T-Roc faces stiff competition from the Hyundai Kona and the Toyota C-HR. Both rivals offer full-hybrid powertrains at lower starting prices—€27,190 for the Kona and €28,300 for the C-HR. However, the T-Roc’s biggest threat might come from within the showroom. When compared back-to-back with the Golf, the hatchback remains the superior driver’s car, offering a more planted and precise feel. Yet, the T-Roc’s higher seating position and larger cargo hold are powerful draws. Interestingly, in higher trims, the T-Roc is actually more affordable than a similarly equipped Golf, making it a compelling value proposition within the VW range.

Ultimately, the new T-Roc is a safe, sensible, and highly refined evolution of a proven formula. It may have lost some of the original’s playful styling, but it has gained the maturity and practicality that modern buyers demand. It doesn’t rewrite the rulebook, but it executes the crossover mission with a level of competence that is difficult to ignore.

Special thanks to Volkswagen Koutoumanos in Kalamata, Greece for providing the test vehicle.

Volkswagen spent eight years leaning on the original T-Roc for its subcompact crossover sales in Europe, a lifetime in the fast-moving automotive world.
