However, as I approach a red 2027 Audi RS5, the car’s aggressive stance suggests that a little weather isn’t going to spoil the party. It looks mean as hell, hunkered down with the kind of visual gravity we’ve come to expect from Audi Sport, yet its initial demeanor is surprisingly polite. This is the new era of the RS5, where massive internal combustion power meets a sophisticated plug-in hybrid system.

Upon startup, if you’ve selected the Comfort or Balanced drive modes, the RS5 remains eerily silent. It defaults to electric-only operation, drawing power from a 22-kWh (usable) battery pack positioned over the rear axle. This battery feeds an electric motor integrated directly into the transmission, contributing 173 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. To put that in perspective, the electric motor alone produces more torque than the standard A5’s turbocharged four-cylinder engine. While Audi hasn’t released an official 0-60 mph claim for EV mode, it feels plenty punchy for urban navigation and can sustain speeds of up to 87 mph. On the European cycle, Audi claims an electric range of 54 miles—a genuinely usable amount that could cover many American commutes without burning a drop of premium unleaded.

Navigating through small towns and onto winding country roads, the RS5 proves it hasn’t forgotten its luxury mandate. The ride is firm, as a performance flagship should be, but it remains sophisticated and comfortable. The cabin is a vault of quietude, and the electric power delivery is effortless. Drivers can toggle through several regenerative braking settings, though even the most aggressive mode stops short of true one-pedal driving. While you can use a physical button on the center console to lock the car into EV mode, the system is designed to bring the combustion engine into play whenever the driver’s right foot demands it. And when that engine wakes up, it’s a whole new animal. Despite sharing a displacement with its predecessor, this twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 is entirely new from the ground up.

On its own, the V6 produces 503 hp—nearly 60 horses more than the outgoing RS5 Competition. When the hybrid system joins the fray, the total system output climbs to a staggering 630 hp and 608 pound-feet of torque. In calmer driving modes, the engine’s presence is felt through a pleasant, constant burbly sound that avoids the buzzy, synthetic drone found in some competitors. The handoff between gas and electric power is remarkably seamless, and the 8-speed automatic manages shifts with near-imperceptible precision in standard modes, becoming more deliberate and snappy as you dial up the aggression.

Audi officially states the RS5 will hit 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, but behind the wheel, that figure feels like a conservative estimate. The powertrain is incredibly reactive; a quick jab at the throttle results in prompt downshifts and a massive surge of torque. For moments that require everything the car has to give, there is a red boost button on the steering wheel. Pressing it grants 10 seconds of maximum power, dropping the transmission to the lowest possible gear and spiking the revs. If you happen to be in EV mode, the boost button instantly fires up the V6, priming it for a full-throttle assault. The experience is accompanied by a dedicated countdown timer and specialized graphics in the gauge cluster. Audi provides a telling statistic for this “spontaneous acceleration”: after 2.5 seconds of wide-open throttle, the new RS5 will have traveled 74 feet, whereas the outgoing car would have only covered 48.

As the road begins to snake up a mountain pass, I engage RS Sport mode via the steering wheel. The car also offers a configurable RS Individual mode and an RS Torque Rear mode—the latter of which disables stability control to mimic a rear-wheel-drive bias, a risky proposition on today’s slick surfaces. In RS Sport, the optional RS Sport exhaust finds its voice, delivering a sharp bark and a satisfying overrun that feels authentic rather than manufactured. However, the real auditory treat comes from the turbochargers, which provide a constant symphony of whooshes and whistles as you work the throttle.

Interestingly, RS Sport prioritizes traction and a balanced handling setup, whereas Dynamic mode leans more heavily on a rear-biased feel. Audi has often been criticized for steering that feels overly light and disconnected, but the RS5’s rack is a step in the right direction. While still light, it is more satisfying and communicative than the previous generation or even the current RS6. It gains weight in sportier settings, remaining quick, accurate, and progressive. As the drizzle turns into a snow flurry near the summit, the RS5 remains remarkably sure-footed. Even on summer rubber, the Quattro system and the precision of the hybrid power delivery instill confidence, though the worsening conditions eventually dictate a retreat back into the safety of Comfort mode. It is a testament to the RS5’s evolution: it is now a car that can whisper through a village on battery power and, seconds later, tear up a mountain pass with 630 horsepower of hybridized fury.

The morning air is thick with a persistent drizzle, the kind of damp, grey atmosphere that usually dampens the spirits of a performance car launch.
