A demonstration published by a 12-year-old developer operating under the username Kick shows the 2009 camera executing the game entirely through physical camera controls.

Core movement maps to the arrow and zoom buttons, while the rear dial cycles through the player’s weapon inventory, according to the project’s documentation on GitHub. The play button handles interactions such as opening doors and activating switches, and the DISP or INFO button pulls up the automap.

Unlike novelty ports that compromise gameplay mechanics, doom550d incorporates comprehensive mod and level pack management. Users can store up to 32 WAD files simultaneously, maintain independent save states for each game file, and access debugging logs. The firmware mod supports the original Doom release, Doom II, TNT Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, and the open-source fork Freedoom. Raven Software titles built on the same engine, including Heretic and Hexen, alongside Doom 64, remain incompatible.

Display output switches between a native 320 x 240 resolution and an upscaled 720 x 480 full-screen mode. Players can also trigger an in-game cheat menu by rapidly pressing the camera’s delete button.

Running the software requires Canon firmware version 1.0.9 and an SD card loaded with Magic Lantern alongside the compiled “doom.mo” module file. Official game data must be supplied separately through WAD files obtained from digital storefronts such as Steam or GOG.

The developer has also published early source code for an NES emulator targeting the same Canon 550D hardware, allowing users to compile and test select console ROMs directly on the camera.

A custom open-source modification has turned a 15-year-old digital camera into a functioning gaming handheld, delivering playable frame rates and mod support for id Software‘s classic shooter Doom.
