Traders betting against the market lost roughly $2.7 billion during a single 24-hour window, followed by another $1.2 billion in liquidations the next day, according to Bitget Wallet research analyst Lacie Zhang.

Zhang said Bitcoin positions accounted for approximately $2.75 billion of the initial wipeout, describing the event as one of the largest forced short covering episodes in recent crypto history. Spot exchange-traded funds amplified the squeeze, absorbing more than $1.1 billion in two sessions.

Inflows reached approximately $517 million on August 19 and climbed to $606 million on August 20, following an $853.5 million haul across five consecutive trading days earlier in the month. CoinShares head of research Julio Moreno stated that ETFs purchased roughly 7,500 BTC in one day, marking the highest single-day acquisition volume since April.

Moreno noted that while spot demand had started expanding days prior, announcements from the U.S. Treasury and political developments in Washington provided the spark. The Treasury’s expanded long-dated buyback plan weakened the dollar and rekindled demand for debasement hedges including gold and Bitcoin.

Similar phases of accelerating spot demand have historically yielded a median 23% Bitcoin gain across the subsequent two months, according to CoinShares data. Political momentum also influenced market positioning after Donald Trump met with finance and crypto executives at the White House to urge passage of a fair version of the Clarity Act.

The proposed legislation seeks to establish a comprehensive federal framework for digital assets and define regulatory jurisdictions between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission. While the Clarity Act remains stalled until the Senate returns to the measure in September, CFTC Chair Michael S.
