Mikel Arteta<\/a> faces immediate tactical adjustments for Arsenal\u2019s Premier League opener, with recent signing Bruno Guimaraes<\/a> doubtful to feature as the champions begin their title defense.<\/p>\n

The Gunners open their league campaign on Friday evening against newly promoted Coventry City at Emirates Stadium.<\/p>\n

Guimaraes remains a fitness uncertainty after exiting at halftime during Arsenal\u2019s 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City last Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s see how it is,\u201d Arteta told his pre-match press conference when asked about Guimaraes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s evolving really well, but let\u2019s see for tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka are cleared to play, full-back Jurrien Timber has not returned to squad training while recovering from a groin injury.<\/p>\n

To address defensive gaps, Arsenal<\/a> are finalizing a deal with Aston Villa<\/a> for centre-back Ezri Konsa<\/a> to lessen the impact of William Saliba\u2019s long-term injury.<\/p>\n

Saliba’s prolonged absence leaves Arsenal short on proven central defensive options after the French international anchored a defense that conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League last season.<\/p>\n

On their remaining transfer business, Arteta said: \u201cWe are really active in the market. I think I mentioned that a few days ago. The ambition is to improve the squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously we have a really specific issue in the back line, especially with the long term injury of Willi and the fact that we miss one more defender that\u2019s clear. So we are trying to reinforce that area. Whenever we\u2019re ready, we\u2019ll announce something.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m always positive, I\u2019m always confident. It\u2019s something that I cannot control. It doesn\u2019t depend just on us. So we are willing to improve that area, and we\u2019re going to try our best to achieve that.\u201d<\/p>\n

One player who has been linked with a move away from North London is Myles Lewis-Skelly, whose versatility came to the fore last season as he was used in midfield as well as at the back.<\/p>\n

And Arteta made the Gunners\u2019 stance on a Lewis-Skelly transfer clear.<\/p>\n

Pressed on whether the 19-year-old would be staying at the club, Arteta replied: \u201c100 per cent.\u201d<\/p>\n
