We’re not using the power from the grid—we’re using brand‑new power.”

In March, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle and xAI signed the White House’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge, agreeing to pay for new electricity generation and infrastructure needed for their data centers. According to U.S. Energy Information Administration data, data center electricity consumption is projected to double by 2030, driven primarily by expanding AI training and inference requirements.

Trump urged local officials to accommodate the buildout, citing tax generation and capital investment. “If I were the mayor of a town or the governor of a state, and I had a chance to get a big plant, an AI plant or a data center, I would absolutely want it,” Trump said. “The jobs are enormous and the money paid, the taxes paid, are just enormous.”

However, Trump acknowledged the industry “could use a little public relations help,” as opposition to AI data centers grows over electricity costs, water use and other environmental impacts.

<img decoding="async" alt="Myriad: When will OpenAI release GPT-6? Banks and asset managers are also increasingly weighing community opposition when financing projects, with at least 75 data centers worth roughly $130 billion facing local opposition in the first quarter of 2026.

Regional grid operators have simultaneously raised concerns regarding interconnection backlogs and regional supply margins. In the footprint of grid operator PJM Interconnection, requested power interconnections for data center developments exceeded 40 gigawatts in early 2026, prompting heightened scrutiny over whether behind-the-meter generation projects divert essential long-term power generation away from retail electricity consumers.

Read also:

Trump Presses Congress for Clarity Act Passage to Secure U.S. Crypto Leadership

Crypto Stocks Surge as $1 Billion Short Squeeze Forces Bearish Bets to Cover

Kalshi Files with CFTC to Launch Copper Perpetual Futures

President Donald Trump is promoting private power generation for artificial intelligence data centers as the solution to aging electrical infrastructure, pushing back against state regulations and local opposition to energy-intensive technology facilities.
