The certified payouts have funneled hundreds of millions of dollars back to Fortune 500 balance sheets, triggering sharp divergence over whether corporations will reimburse retail customers, absorb the capital, or face consumer litigation.

Amazon, ranking No.1 on the Fortune 500, stands out as one of the largest companies to have already collected refunds. The e-commerce giant said “we received approximately $640 million of tariff refunds under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (“IEEPA”),” during the second quarter of 2026, according to its SEC filing. The amount represented the “significant majority of refunds” it expects to receive. Amazon has said it may offer refunds to only a limited number of customers impacted by the tariffs.

Regulatory disclosures submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission show that while Amazon restricted consumer repayments to limited third-party vendor accounts, competing logistics carriers established dedicated customer reimbursement funds. FedEx reported that its $800 million tariff refund balance is being held specifically for distribution to customers, following a suit FedEx filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade seeking a complete recovery of duties paid under the invalidated executive orders.

Target received almost a billion dollars in refunds during the second quarter, it said on Wednesday. The department store received $994 million in tariff refunds, adding $752 million to net earnings for a total of $1.88 billion and $1.65 to earnings per share.

Target Chief Financial Officer Jim Lee confirmed the company will not issue direct consumer refunds, explaining that the retailer will instead direct the proceeds toward price reduction strategies. Target stated it plans to invest in price to maintain customer value across retail locations. Walmart took a parallel approach in its May financial disclosure, stating that its guidance assumed no direct consumer refunds and confirming that any tariff recoveries would be applied toward lowering retail shelf prices.

In the sportswear sector, Nike disclosed recovering $302 million of an anticipated $986 million in duty refunds as of May 31, listing the remaining $684 million as an outstanding IEEPA tariff receivable. Nike has not established a customer reimbursement framework, leading consumers to file class action lawsuits in federal court alleging the company shifted tariff expenses onto buyers without providing post-ruling reimbursements.

Legal claims over unreturned tariff surcharges have similarly altered policies at Costco, which committed to issuing consumer refunds after facing four class action lawsuits alleging tariff-driven price increases. Other major retailers reported delays or limited recoveries; Kohl’s applied for roughly $140 million of its $190 million in paid tariffs but reported receiving zero cash in its latest filing, while Home Depot stated in an August 18 disclosure that its guidance incorporates expected tariff refunds to partially offset unplanned fuel, energy, and product input costs.

Industrial and technology manufacturers have primarily recognized the refunded duties as corporate margin expansions or capital reserves. Ford reported a $1.3 billion one-time tariff benefit for duties paid between March 2025 and February 2026 after suing the administration, while General Motors recorded a $500 million favorable adjustment. Apple reported that tariff refunds added approximately two percentage points to its fiscal third-quarter gross margin and contributed 11 cents to diluted earnings per share, with company disclosures noting that the refunded capital will be reinvested into domestic manufacturing initiatives.

Read also:

Moderna and Merck Personalized mRNA Cancer Vaccine Succeeds in Landmark Phase 3 Melanoma Trial

Yum Brands Cuts Restaurant Stockouts and Delivery Delays With Unified Tech Platform

Lawmakers Accuse Trump Administration of Violating Impoundment Law Over Unstaffed CDC Programs

The Trump administration has certified $100 billion in tariff refunds out of $166 billion collected after the Supreme Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not authorize executive tariff levies.
