Powered by an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor and an Nvidia RTX 5070 GPU, the laptop operated normally before experiencing recurring Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) crashes eight months into use, prompting a warranty return after a full Windows 11 Pro reinstallation failed to fix the instability.

According to the official work order, the company received the device on July 25 and completed the repairs on August 4. However, when the laptop was shipped back, the owner discovered that it was missing its second memory module.

In the invoice, the company explained that the second SODIMM had been removed because the laptop only supports up to 32GB of system memory. The documentation also stated that the removed module, worth more than $600 as of August 2026, was returned with the device.

The work order allegedly issued by Best Buy.

Official technical specifications from Intel confirm that the Core i9-14900HX processor natively supports up to 192GB of DDR5 system RAM across dual memory channels, directly contradicting the capacity restriction cited in Best Buy’s work order.

The customer insisted that the machine was purchased directly with 64GB of system memory, stating that “this computer was listed with those specs and that’s how it was prebuilt/sold.” The device remains listed on Best Buy’s online platform as “Lenovo – Upgraded – Legion 5,” a prebuilt configuration customized and fulfilled by third-party marketplace seller PC Heaven.

The hardware configuration included a dual-channel 2x32GB DDR5 SO-DIMM setup alongside a 2TB SSD and a 1TB dock station. Forum users advised the owner to escalate the matter with Best Buy management to demand a replacement 32GB SODIMM module matching the exact hardware specifications or a complete unit replacement.

Best Buy returned a customer’s warranty-repaired Lenovo Legion 5 gaming laptop with half of its memory removed, claiming the system could not support the 64GB of RAM with which it was sold.
