In July, financial markets formed the impression that tightening financial conditions through higher yields were performing policy work for the central bank, leaving investors uncertain over whether officials would proceed with rate hikes despite softer inflation and labor data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is too early to draw firm conclusions, but the rise in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nile1.com\/en\/2026\/07\/24\/j-p-morgan-warns-global-interest-rates-will-surge-by-2026-as-public-debt-reaches-100-trillion\/\" class=\"auto-internal-link\" title=\"J.P. Morgan Warns Global Interest Rates Will Surge by 2026 as Public Debt Reaches $100 Trillion\">term premium<\/a> and bear steepening of the curve following Warsh\u2019s first two [Federal Open Market Committee] FOMC meetings could indicate that the Fed\u2019s credibility is being tested,\u201d said Bassam Nawfal, chief asset allocation strategist at Alpine Macro in a report yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The shift in the term premium\u2014the extra compensation investors require to hold long-term debt rather than rolling over short-term bills\u2014follows increased uncertainty over the central bank&#8217;s rate trajectory. Data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/research\/data_indicators\/term-premia-models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve Bank of New York<\/a> shows term premia rising alongside a bear steepening of the yield curve, where long-term yields climb faster than short-term rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a teething process whenever there is a new Fed chair \u2026 there were concerns about Jay Powell when he first came in,\u201d Prof. Kroszner told Fortune\u2014speaking last week, ahead of the latest yield jump. \u201cKevin is very clear that he wants to change the communication strategy, and people \u2026 in the press as well as in the markets don\u2019t like change, [they think]: \u2018I\u2019m used to this, I know how everything works, and now I don\u2019t know how everything works and I\u2019m frustrated.\u2018\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Randall Kroszner, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business who was confirmed to the Fed\u2019s Board of Governors alongside Warsh in 2006, noted that Warsh intends to focus on broader inflation objectives rather than reacting to incremental economic data. At his inaugural post-FOMC press conference in June, Warsh stated: \u201cI\u2019ve said for years inflation is a choice. You bet it is. And today I\u2019m announcing that this Committee, unambiguously and unanimously, have decided we are going to deliver on that.\u201d The statement came despite demands from President Trump that his Fed nominee be willing to cut the base rate.<\/p>\n<p>Economists remain divided over Warsh\u2019s communication policy. Former Federal Reserve economist Claudia Sahm stated that Warsh is \u201clong on symptoms and short on solutions.\u201d Jeremy Siegel, emeritus professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, wrote for WisdomTree that central bankers have an \u201cobligation to explain the economic framework behind their decisions\u201d and argued that Warsh fell short during his recent public appearances.<\/p>\n<p>Kroszner indicated that Warsh remains aware of market reactions while establishing internal task forces to review current Fed practices.
