Following hours of disruption on Monday, developer platform GitHub<\/a> announced at 1:34 PM ET that engineers had identified “the problematic component” and executed “corrective actions,” restoring webhooks, API requests, and pull requests to working order. Nevertheless, persistent failures lingered across the main GitHub website and its AI assistant Copilot\u2014a developer tool powered by OpenAI models hosted on Microsoft<\/a> Azure\u2014past 3:05 PM ET, delaying the final all-clear signal until 5:15 PM ET.<\/p>\n

Software developers relying on platform infrastructure beyond casual “vibe coding” faced significant operational delays on Monday when GitHub experienced a multi-hour service outage. System errors initially surfaced around 9:40 AM ET and persisted in varying capacities until 5:15 PM ET. The company’s status page initially documented widespread core infrastructure issues, specifically disrupting Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), automated webhooks, and pull requests that allow developers to merge code changes into repositories. According to GitHub’s platform figures, the service hosts more than 100 million software developers and over 400 million repositories globally, making API and webhook failures critical bottlenecks for enterprise continuous integration and deployment (CI\/CD) pipelines. The AI-powered Copilot<\/a> feature was also impacted, triggering disruption for developers utilizing machine learning tools for automated code generation.<\/p>\n

The exact technical trigger behind the infrastructure failure has not yet been publicly revealed. The incident marks at least the second prominent downtime event across Microsoft’s technology ecosystem in recent weeks, following an extensive outage late last month that knocked Xbox network and cloud gaming services offline for several hours. Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for $7.5 billion, integrating its services heavily into Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure. GitHub assured users that it would publish a “detailed root cause analysis” as soon as internal technical teams complete their post-incident investigation.<\/p>\n

“We are experiencing high error rates around 20 percent for web experiences and API traffic. Archive downloads and raw repository content downloads are experiencing an approximate 50 percent error rate,” stated an operational status update published shortly before 11:00 AM ET during the surge in reported failures. “We are currently performing mitigations based on our investigation thus far and are monitoring for improvement.” In cloud service operations, error rates reaching 50 percent on repository content downloads severely impede software build pipelines, as automated build tools routinely fetch raw codebase files to compile and test software.<\/p>\n
