According to senior Iranian officials cited by the New York Times, the warnings were delivered as the regime debated whether to formalize a memorandum of understanding<\/a> to reopen the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and extend a fragile ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Pezeshkian, leading a pragmatist faction against regime hardliners, reportedly threatened to resign if the deal was not approved. This political ultimatum was bolstered by a dire assessment from the central bank, which warned in a letter to Khamenei that Iran faces a severe budget crisis. The bank cautioned that the country would exhaust its critical food and medical supplies by late August if the U.S. naval blockade remains in place.<\/p>\n

The Strait of Hormuz<\/a> remains the world’s most important energy chokepoint, through which roughly one-fifth of global liquid petroleum consumption passes. While Iran has historically used its proximity to the channel as a geopolitical lever, the current blockade has inverted that relationship.
