Beijing’s internet regulator has granted initial clearance for a proprietary Apple large language model trained directly with technical assistance from Alibaba<\/a>, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n

Three sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the Cyberspace Administration of China officially registered Apple\u2019s generative system last month\u2014a legal requirement that has permanently blocked Western competitors OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, and Anthropic, creator of Claude, from operating inside the mainland borders.<\/p>\n

China requires all public-facing generative AI models to undergo rigorous algorithmic reviews and alignment checks with state content policies, an enforcement regime that has shut out every major foreign developer to date.<\/p>\n

Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai publicly verified the joint technical operation during a February 2025 announcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey talked to a number of companies in China,\u201d Tsai said during the event. \u201cIn the end they chose to do business with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apple intends to integrate its internal architecture alongside Alibaba\u2019s Qwen model and foundational software from Baidu, though Reuters reported the specific division of operational tasks among the three systems remains completely unannounced ahead of a scheduled iOS software rollout \u201cin the coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mainland approval follows twelve months of severe operational disruptions and product setbacks across Apple’s global artificial intelligence division.<\/p>\n

Engineers abandoned an in-house architecture in January to license Google\u2019s Gemini for next-generation Foundation Models after internal test builds triggered widespread performance complaints and critical rollout delays.<\/p>\n

A class-action lawsuit over missing software features forced Apple into a $250 million legal settlement in May with consumers who bought handsets expecting tools that never shipped, leaving the company severely outpaced by domestic competitor Huawei, which already embeds native generative AI tools across its smartphone lineup.<\/p>\n

Huawei captured a leading 17% share of China’s premium smartphone segment in early 2025 after equipping its HarmonyOS ecosystem with deep deep-learning assistant features.<\/p>\n

A completely redesigned Siri AI capable of multi-turn dialogue, image recognition, and personal data analysis debuted in June, though executive statements confirmed the software will launch in beta later this year while remaining entirely locked out of Chinese devices pending further governmental review.<\/p>\n
