It marks the lowest monthly tally since July 2024, when employers announced 25,885 cuts, and the fifth time this year that monthly job reductions fell below year-ago levels.

Through the first seven months of 2026, U.S. employers have announced 477,033 job cuts, a 41% decrease from the 806,383 cuts recorded during the same period of 2025.

“The pace of layoffs fell dramatically this summer. Layoff plans continue to be announced primarily in tech, and Artificial Intelligence is still the story, as investments in the technology reshape organizations,” said Andy Challenger, workplace expert and chief revenue officer for Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Corporate hiring plans have also picked up despite restructuring. “Hiring has also increased over last year by 25%, so while AI is shifting the labor market, it is not dismantling it,” Challenger added.

Despite the broader drop in overall downsizing, artificial intelligence continues to be cited as a primary driver for restructuring. Employers attributed AI to 10,970 job cuts in July, representing 33% of all announced reductions for the month. July was the fifth consecutive month in which AI was the top reason cited for layoffs.

Year-to-date, AI has been cited in 112,713 job cut announcements, accounting for roughly 24% of all corporate cuts in 2026. Since Challenger, Gray & Christmas first began tracking AI as a distinct category, the technology has been cited in 184,538 job cuts. The firm noted that ambiguity remains around what constitutes an AI-related cut, as some employers cite it directly while others point to technological deployments more broadly.

“Naming AI in a layoff announcement can win over investors while pushing current and prospective employees away. That’s why the messaging has swung from hedging to aggressively citing it,” Challenger said. “As regulations start to take shape, companies will be even more careful in their announcements, which would make tracking the impact of AI on jobs more opaque,” he added.

The tech sector announced 9,867 job cuts in July, bringing its total for the year to 149,023—a 67% increase from the same period last year. Tech layoffs account for 31% of all U.S. job cuts in 2026, as Challenger noted that tech “remains the center of gravity for this year’s cuts, and AI is still the reason companies give.”

Financial firms announced 3,157 cuts in July, bringing their year-to-date total to 18,626, a 31% drop from last year. Government agencies reported 2,962 cuts last month, taking their annual total to 20,752—down 93% from the 292,294 cuts announced in the first seven months of 2025, which were largely driven by federal workforce reductions.

The slowdown in layoffs comes alongside modest private sector employment growth, with ADP reporting that the private sector added 44,000 jobs in July, below expectations.
