Wisconsin<\/a> Democrats vote Tuesday in a high-stakes gubernatorial primary that pits democratic socialist Francesca Hong<\/a> against Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, testing whether battleground voters will embrace progressive momentum or prioritize moderate electability ahead of November’s general election.<\/p>\n

The primary carries critical consequences for control of state government. Democrats are aiming to defend the executive mansion and position themselves to reclaim full legislative control for the first time since 2010. The winner will face Republican Representative Tom Tiffany\u2014a staunch ally of President Donald Trump who entered August holding a ten-to-one financial advantage over both Democratic primary rivals.<\/p>\n

Crowley\u2019s late sprint to capture undecided voters follows weeks of ballot volatility that threatens to fragment the Democratic electorate. After withdrawing from the race on July 8, Crowley re-entered 10 days later with the endorsement of two-term Governor Tony Evers following the departure of Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez. Former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes subsequently suspended his campaign amid misconduct allegations. However, both Rodriguez and Barnes remain on the printed ballot, locking in thousands of early votes after more than 112,000 absentee ballots were returned by late July.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve created a mess,\u201d said Michael Gebben, a 64-year-old Democrat who cast an absentee vote for Rodriguez before her exit. \u201cHopefully we can get out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Late July polling from Marquette University Law School showed Hong, a state representative and former restaurant cook vying to become Wisconsin\u2019s first female and first Asian American governor, holding a substantial lead over the field. Her campaign has recently faced increased scrutiny from moderates over past social media posts calling for police defunding, criticizing Valentine\u2019s Day as a product of capitalism, and advocating to cancel Thanksgiving over its historical connection to colonialism. Hong has since clarified those comments, stating she does not support abolishing police departments.<\/p>\n

Republicans have seized on the statements to frame the race. Tiffany accused Hong of seeking \u201cto destroy the traditions and culture that unite us.\u201d In justifying Evers’ intervention in the primary, governor spokesperson Britt Cudaback stated this week, \u201cWisconsinites can\u2019t afford for November to come down to the most extreme things Tom Tiffany<\/a> and Francesca Hong have said online.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seeking to become Wisconsin\u2019s first Black governor, Crowley has pushed back against claims that his gubernatorial backing makes him an institutional figurehead. \u201cWhen people try to call me the establishment, I look at that as a slur, particularly as an African American candidate,\u201d Crowley said. \u201cI have never run for office to protect the establishment. I\u2019ve always been here to protect people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crowley pointed to progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed\u2019s narrow victory over Representative Haley Stevens in Michigan\u2019s U.S. Senate primary last week as evidence that the race remains open. Crowley said that El-Sayed\u2019s slim margin of victory \u201cdoes give me a little bit of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to focus on those undecided voters,\u201d Crowley said.<\/p>\n

Primary voter Sarah Miller, a 49-year-old software engineer from Madison, exemplified the pragmatic calculus guiding mainstream Democrats toward Crowley. \u201cThe divide is real,\u201d Miller said, while describing Hong as a \u201cvery, very weak candidate\u201d whose polling advantage is \u201ca little bit of a mirage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think she can win,\u201d Miller added.<\/p>\n

Progressive voters reject the electability arguments. Hong supporter Chris Vestin, 54, characterized Evers\u2019 intervention as \u201ccounterproductive\u201d and warned that \u201cEstablishment Democrats want to take the choice away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt frustrates me when they say that person is unelectable,\u201d Vestin said. \u201cA lot of times it\u2019s racist, it\u2019s sexist.\u201d<\/p>\n

With party control over future policy battles hinges on the top of the ticket, Crowley reiterated the broad structural stakes to voters. \u201cWe need a trifecta,\u201d Crowley said. \u201cAnd who is at the top of the ticket matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Assessing the closing days of the campaign, Crowley supporter Lindsey Lee, 61, noted that undecided voters appear to be shifting late. \u201cIt\u2019s like the last 50 yards of a horse race,\u201d Lee said. \u201cHong is obviously in the lead but Crowley is coming up on a side lane. I think it will be a photo finish.\u201d<\/p>\n
