Just 3% of respondents reported a “great deal of confidence” in financial guidance generated by AI. In contrast, 79% of adults expressed trust in professional human financial advisors, with roughly 25% placing a high degree of confidence in human managers.

The findings highlight a structural boundary for financial technology firms and major brokerages attempting to automate wealth advisory services. David Chubak, head of wealth management at Edward Jones—which manages more than $1.9 trillion in client assets—noted that retail clients strictly separate preliminary research from actual portfolio execution. The survey “reaffirms to us is that when it comes to the conversation of consequence, to making a real-life decision, people aren’t ready to trust AI as the decision maker for them, as the counselor,” Chubak said. “Rather, they are still relying on their financial advisor as their trusted human partner to help them think through the process, the experience of that decision.”

Rather than replacing traditional advisory channels, AI tools are functioning primarily as high-tech engines for tactical queries. Investors frequently turn to AI for basic information regarding account mechanics, including 401(k) retirement plans, 529 education savings accounts, or newly established vehicles like Trump Accounts.

Overall, approximately 75% of American adults sought financial advice from at least one source during the previous 12 months. Self-directed internet research led all categories at 73%, followed by conversations with family members at 35% and professional financial advisors at 32%. Traditional news or social media channels accounted for 26%, while 23% consulted friends.

“AI, as we see it, plays an important role in some of the discovery and approach to people improving their finances. When it comes to improving their financial fulfillment, people still believe inherently in the importance of a human, trust relationship,” Chubak said. He noted that investors turn away from software when confronting complex planning goals and personal financial anxieties: “There, they’re going to the advisor to have that conversation, to unroot what the real question is that they’re trying to solve and then try to solve it with them.”

Major Wall Street wealth managers have largely aligned with this dynamic, deploying AI models internally to streamline administrative tasks for human advisors rather than replacing them. Chubak emphasized that early-stage AI interactions can “really help them identify when they need an advisor,” as well as to help them “sharpen where the focus areas that they want to go are, so that the advisor can really hone in on the most impactful opportunities.”

American retail investors are increasingly incorporating generative artificial intelligence into their initial financial research, yet an overwhelming majority refuse to trust algorithms with consequential investment decisions, according to new research from Gallup and wealth manager Edward Jones.
