American Regent, Inc. has initiated a nationwide recall of select lots of its veterinary joint medications after routine testing detected floating glass fibers inside injection vials.<\/p>\n
The recall affects two lots of Adequan Canine Injection, prescribed for joint dysfunction in dogs, and two lots of Adequan i.m. Injection, used to treat joint dysfunction and lameness in horses. Both products are clear to slightly yellow solutions intended for intramuscular administration.<\/p>\n
While no adverse events or injuries have been reported to date, foreign particulate matter in injectable drugs poses direct physical risks to animals upon injection.<\/p>\n
“The administration of an intramuscular injectable product containing particulate matter, such as glass fibers, may result in local irritation, swelling, inflammation, injection site pain, infection, or abscesses,” the company said in its recall notice.<\/p>\n
The recall impacts inventory across the veterinary supply chain. Veterinary hospitals, distributors, and retailers have been instructed to immediately remove unused stock from inventory and return the affected lots to the manufacturer or discard them.<\/p>\n
Consumers using the medication are urged to stop administration, discard or return the product, and contact a veterinarian if an animal shows signs of complications linked to the injection.<\/p>\n
