Alphabet Inc.<\/a> shares fell around 5% on Wednesday following a sweeping leadership restructuring at Google DeepMind<\/a> and the high-profile departure of veteran Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean, as the technology giant faces persistent delays with its flagship artificial intelligence models and rising talent competition.<\/p>\n

Under the executive shake-up, Google DeepMind Chief Executive Demis Hassabis<\/a> will give up his operational title to become chairman of the unit and chief scientist of Alphabet. Daily management of the business and oversight of future Gemini model development will transition to Koray Kavukcuoglu, who steps into the role of senior vice president reporting directly to Alphabet Chief Executive Sundar Pichai<\/a>. Kavukcuoglu previously served as DeepMind\u2019s chief technology officer and Alphabet\u2019s chief AI architect.<\/p>\n

The organizational changes coincide with the exit of Dean, a 27-year Google veteran who played a foundational role in building the company’s computing infrastructure and machine learning systems. Dean is leaving to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on automating machine learning, scientific research, and engineering. He is joined by former Google researchers Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le, with Alphabet acting as a founding investor and cloud compute provider.<\/p>\n

In a note to staff, Pichai acknowledged Dean’s exit, writing: \u201cAfter an incredible 27-year run, Jeff Dean is at a moment where he wants to try something new, and we\u2019re excited to support him in that. Jeff and Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat are launching an independent public benefit corporation to accelerate discoveries in ML, science, and engineering.\u201d Speaking on the transition in an interview with The New York Times, Dean noted that operating outside a public company gives the team room to make calls that aren\u2019t \u201cnecessarily in the company\u2019s purest financial interests.\u201d<\/p>\n

The executive realignment arrives at a delicate moment for Alphabet\u2019s artificial intelligence operations. Its next flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, is currently months behind its original June launch timeline. At the same time, the company has endured high-profile talent defections to key competitors, including Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer\u2019s move to OpenAI and Nobel laureate John Jumper\u2019s exit to Anthropic.<\/p>\n

Hassabis, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on AlphaFold, told employees he will focus heavily on long-term strategy for artificial general intelligence and applications at Isomorphic Labs<\/a>, Alphabet\u2019s AI drug discovery venture, which he previously called \u201cthe top application of AI for improving human health.\u201d In his message to staff, Hassabis wrote that he believes AGI is \u201cclose at hand and that getting the next steps right is critical for humanity,\u201d while pointing to \u201cgreat progress\u201d on upcoming architecture, including the unreleased Gemini 4 model. In a separate internal communication, Pichai maintained that Google retains the compute power, distribution channels, and research talent required to compete.<\/p>\n
