SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 OpenAI<\/a><\/a> has deployed specialized artificial intelligence agents across its internal financial operations, automating reporting and data reconciliation tasks to cut execution times by up to two-thirds, according to company financial executives.<\/p>\n

The rollout within OpenAI\u2019s strategic finance team, which operates under Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar, relies on an enterprise tool called ChatGPT Work. The AI agent executes multi-step tasks across files and software applications over extended hours, supporting finance teams that partner directly with the startup\u2019s engineering, product, and go-to-market divisions.<\/p>\n

During an operational briefing, members of the strategic finance unit detailed how the agent automates quarter-end audits by cross-referencing board presentation materials against actual financial records to catch discrepancies. The system also pulls operational data from platforms like Databricks into validated dashboards to structure and accelerate the monthly close process.<\/p>\n

\u201cTeams combine approved financial data, Excel models, and business context to get frontier-level intelligence that completes tasks two to three times faster,\u201d said Kyle Kober, director of product finance at OpenAI.<\/p>\n

The internal deployment comes as Friar, a former Square and Nextdoor executive who joined OpenAI as CFO in June 2024, works to reinforce corporate financial infrastructure as the company expands its enterprise footprint. Tech developers have increasingly targeted enterprise workflows with autonomous agents capable of performing multi-step corporate tasks.<\/p>\n

Jackson Wang, who leads data science within OpenAI’s strategic finance team, said the tool has helped shift financial planning away from spreadsheet-based tracking toward statistical forecasting models, improving accuracy and cross-team collaboration.<\/p>\n

Despite the operational speed gains, OpenAI executives noted that the AI agent does not replace underlying accounting systems or formal controller sign-offs. Data usage remains subject to auditable governance controls that lock down spend and monitor permissions across the department, according to Kober.<\/p>\n

The shift is also altering internal hiring requirements. Stephanie Struck, head of product finance at OpenAI, said traditional skills like accounting, forecasting, controls, and analytical rigor now represent baseline expectations rather than key differentiators. Instead, hiring decisions prioritize candidates who combine technical data skills with critical judgment to challenge AI-generated output.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy does this matter for the business?\u201d is the core question team members must continuously ask, Struck said, adding that analytical insights only deliver value if shared fast enough to change operational outcomes.<\/p>\n
