Ackman, the 59-year-old chief executive of Pershing Square Capital Management<\/a>, revealed in interviews that he actively avoids inflated costs, including seeking out cheaper parking garages and strictly monitoring household utilities. Raised in a $56,000 New York home that his father stretched to purchase in 1965, Ackman built his financial empire without inherited capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I don\u2019t like the price of the garage, I\u2019ll go to a different one. It\u2019s funny. I don\u2019t like paying for parking, and I used to own a parking company,\u201d Ackman said. \u201cOr it really upsets me if the gas grill was running over the weekend\u2014which it was, and it pissed me off. I really don\u2019t like wasting money. I wouldn\u2019t call it a neurosis, but it\u2019s something that I care about.\u201d<\/p>\n

The refusal to adopt luxury consumption habits extends across the technology sector. Scale AI<\/a> co-founder Lucy Guo, who holds a net worth of $1.3 billion as the world\u2019s youngest self-made female billionaire, continues to drive an older Honda Civic and routinely utilizes buy-one-get-one-free promotions on food delivery apps. Outside of industry events, Guo relies on free promotional attire or budget clothing from online retailer Shein.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like wasting money,\u201d Guo said. \u201cWho you see typically wasting money on designer clothes, a nice car, et cetera, they\u2019re technically in the millionaire range\u2026All their friends are multimillionaires or billionaires, and they feel a little bit insecure, so they feel the need to be flashy to show other people, \u2018Look, I\u2019m successful.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Such personal capital preservation mirrors decades of behavior by veteran corporate leaders. Berkshire Hathaway<\/a> Chairman Warren Buffett<\/a>, currently ranked as the world\u2019s 10th-wealthiest individual with a $146 billion net worth, still lives in the Omaha, Nebraska home he bought for $31,500 in 1958. Buffett historically avoided high-end vehicles in favor of a 20-year-old automobile and frequently uses coupons at fast-food restaurants like McDonald\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not think that standard of living equates with cost of living beyond a certain point,\u201d Buffett stated during a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting. \u201cMy life would not be happier\u2026it\u2019d be worse if I had six or eight houses or a whole bunch of different things I could have. It just doesn\u2019t correlate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI live under my means. I think it\u2019s incredibly important,\u201d Palmer said. \u201cIf I have $1 million in my pocket, my rent is going to be $1,500\u2014that\u2019s how underneath my means I\u2019m talking. My car note is going to be $340. I don\u2019t need a Bentley Bentayga, I\u2019ll ride in a Lexus.\u201d<\/p>\n
