Halem will become eligible for parole after seven years, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors detailed how Halem and three accomplices used high-end luxury vehicles and tactical gear to carry out the December 28, 2024 raid on a Koreatown apartment around 2:30 a.m. Clad in vests identifying them as law enforcement, the crew entered the unit using an access code provided by a co-conspirator who had rented the residence. Once inside, they handcuffed two occupants, transferred $350,000 in Bitcoin from a crypto account, and seized physical cash and jewelry.

The vehicles used in the raid—a Range Rover and a Lamborghini Urus—were registered to a car rental business owned by Halem. He had left full-time service with the Los Angeles Police Department nearly two years earlier after 13 years on the force, though he remained a reserve officer at the time of the offense.

Addressing the court, Judge Escobedo dismissed defense attempts to focus on the 17-year-old victim, who testified under his first name that he built his crypto holdings partly through online scams. Escobedo noted that the victim’s actions did not excuse the crime, describing the act of a former police officer masquerading as law enforcement to rob someone as “heinous and egregious.”

Halem’s family rejected the verdict. His mother, Randi Halem, said she believed the truth was suppressed during the trial, calling the conviction “a miscarriage of the law.”

The sentencing comes amid a sharp global rise in physical extortion schemes targeting digital asset owners. Security firm CertiK verified 52 violent targeted incidents—commonly referred to as “wrench attacks”—in the first half of 2026, resulting in $124.1 million in recorded losses. Law enforcement impersonation has increasingly emerged as a core tactic in such robberies, with similar armed schemes reported across Europe and North America.

Three co-defendants—Luis Banuelos, Pierre Louis, and Mishael Mann—were charged in August 2025 with kidnapping for ransom, first-degree residential robbery, and home invasion robbery in concert. All three have pleaded not guilty and are awaiting trial.

Halem also faces separate pending charges involving insurance fraud and an alleged second cryptocurrency robbery conducted days prior to the Koreatown break-in.

Read also:

Bitcoin Bridge Boltz Halts Swap Service Indefinitely Over AI-Assisted Attacks

Silicon Valley CEO Sparks Backlash After Using AI to Secretly Record Toddlers

OpenAI Rebuts Apple Trade Secrets Suit, Cites Identity Errors and Flawed Offboarding

A Los Angeles judge sentenced former LAPD officer Eric Halem to life plus 15 years in state prison on Tuesday for leading a violent home invasion that targeted a teenager’s cryptocurrency holdings, rejecting his request for a new trial.
