Firefighting crews across Europe struggled on Monday to contain destructive blazes and historic dry spells, marked by a fatal midair helicopter collision during Greek firefighting operations and new meteorological data showing parts of the United Kingdom<\/a> recorded their driest July in nearly two centuries.<\/p>\n

Greek emergency crews were forced to redeploy resources after a pair of chartered helicopters collided on Sunday west of Athens, killing a Greek and a Danish crew member and sending two others to the hospital. All four were private operators chartered by the Greek firefighting service.<\/p>\n

The crash occurred as wild flames pushed past containment lines near Porto Germeno<\/a>, driven by renewed gale-force winds that destroyed farms and property and forced a highway closure. Greek authorities deployed 12 water-dropping planes and 11 helicopters on Monday to battle the blazes, which have forced more than 1,000 evacuations\u2014including over 250 people rescued directly from beaches by boats. Police arrested two contractors on charges of negligent arson linked to a faulty power line from a wind farm.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a difficult fire that has troubled us,\u201d Fire Service spokesman Yiannis Artopios said of the situation west of the capital, where high risks remain as temperatures are set to rise further.<\/p>\n

In France<\/a>, thousands of evacuees returned home Monday after firefighters contained a massive blaze in the region around Bordeaux<\/a> that consumed about 420 square kilometers (162 square miles), making it the country\u2019s largest wildfire on record. The fire prompted the evacuation of more than 224,000 people in France\u2019s largest civilian evacuation outside wartime, destroying 183 homes in Le Porge while tourist destinations like Cap Ferret reopened under caution.<\/p>\n

A second uncontained wildfire in Provence burned through 18 square kilometers (7 square miles), with 1,500 firefighters and helicopters reinforcing fire lines ahead of expected strong winds.<\/p>\n

The crisis across Southern Europe coincides with unprecedented drought conditions in Northern and Western Europe. Provisional statistics from the Met Office released Monday show England and Wales experienced their driest July in nearly 200 years of recordkeeping following heat waves in May and June. All of Wales and more than half of England are officially in drought, with Wales tying its warmest mean July temperature and the United Kingdom marking its second-warmest July.<\/p>\n

According to the European Union\u2019s Copernicus climate service, Europe is Earth\u2019s fastest-warming continent, heating at more than twice the global average rate since the 1980s. Prolonged heat and lack of rainfall have left vegetation dry and combustible, accelerating fire spread.<\/p>\n

Emergency operations extended into the Netherlands on Monday, where Dutch air force Chinook helicopters equipped with water containers helped battle a large forest fire in the southern province of Limburg. The national railway operator halted trains between two local towns, and a campsite was evacuated due to dense smoke plumes.<\/p>\n

The European Forest Fire Information System warned that wildfire risk remains high across the continent through Aug. 5, extending even into traditionally cooler northern regions.<\/p>\n
