Over the entire second quarter, Tesla exported 128,394 Shanghai-built vehicles to buyers in Europe, Canada, and other Asian markets. That figure eclipsed the 126,157 units sold to customers within China, where domestic sales have declined quarter-on-quarter for more than a year as buyers move away from the aging Model 3<\/a> sedan amidst fierce local competition from rivals like BYD Co.<\/p>\n The Shanghai facility remains a critical driver of profitability for Tesla as global operating margins evaporate. The plant benefits from significantly lower labor costs compared to Tesla\u2019s factories in Germany and the U.S., supplemented by cheaper localized component procurement and Chinese government export tax rebates that maximize the factory’s cash-generation capacity.<\/p>\n The growing reliance on Shanghai for international supply arrives as Washington ramps up regulatory barriers between the U.S. and Chinese automotive sectors. Impending U.S. regulations will ban Chinese-linked connected car software starting in model-year 2027, followed by a ban on Chinese hardware components taking effect for model-year 2030.<\/p>\n Tesla has already ceased importing Chinese-assembled vehicles into the U.S. and has instructed North American suppliers to ensure procurement chains are entirely free of Chinese-origin parts.
